Chapter 9 - What Daniel Approved

Brightwell acquisition had not erased data.

Ironically, Ava secretly ordered legal hold before merger.

That preserved second set of records.

But Daniel’s vote gave company control over archive.

If Ava later exposed evidence, Daniel could look like executive who knowingly acquired data to bury it.

He hadn’t known.

Could he prove?

Email showed warning, but vague.

He dismissed.

Negligence, not conspiracy.

Still damaging.

Ava feared Daniel would defend company reflexively.

Thus exclusion.

Then Daniel asked why Vanessa told him Ava died instead of simply saying she vanished voluntarily.

Vanessa answered:

“Because you wouldn’t stop.”

Daniel had hired investigators.

Offered rewards.

Pressured hospitals.

Ava believed search would expose Evelyn before trust protections ready.

So she asked Vanessa to give Daniel finality.

Vanessa chose cruelest form.

Death.

“Why not say she left me?”

“You would have looked harder.”

True.

Daniel hated it.

Then Eleanor discovered legal document signed after Ava’s disappearance.

Ava Mercer.

Dated six months ago.

Notarized remotely.

She was alive then.

Document transferred permanent control of restitution fund to independent board.

Ava removed herself.

Why?

If she was planning return, she no longer needed hold power.

Maybe preparation.

Then another document:

Personal declaration.

To be released if Daniel confronted hidden patient.

It had not been opened.

Condition now met.

Daniel read:

Daniel,

If you are seeing the ring on the wrong hand, then Evelyn survived long enough to come forward.

So patient was Evelyn?

Almost confirmed, but declaration names Evelyn as expected wearer.

Then:

Do not assume the woman under the sheet is Evelyn merely because I planned it that way. Plans fail.

Clever.

Still uncertainty.

Then:

The second ledger matters less than the person who altered it.

Daniel frowned.

Altered?

Everyone assumed ledger was authentic evidence against Mercer.

Ava discovered some entries changed after Margaret copied them.

Who altered?

Not Charles.

He had preserved conflicting version.

Second ledger may itself contain manipulation.

Then Ava wrote:

Vanessa knows why page seven scares me.

Daniel turned.

Vanessa looked sick.

“What’s on page seven?”

She whispered:

“Your name.”

Daniel stared.

“I was twelve when V-17 trial happened.”

“Not Daniel Mercer.”

“Then who?”

Vanessa said:

“Daniel Reed.”

Everyone looked at Dr. Reed.

His face changed.
