Chapter 1 - The Hand That Moved

Daniel Mercer had spent eleven months believing his wife had vanished.
For the first seven months, Vanessa told him Ava was hiding.
For the next three, she said Ava wanted no contact.
Then, three weeks before that morning, Vanessa finally said the sentence that shattered him.
“She’s dead.”
No body.
No funeral.
No grave.
Only Vanessa’s word.
That was why Daniel followed her into St. Catherine Medical Center and forced his way into an operating room that was supposedly empty.
“Where is Ava?”
Vanessa backed toward the operating table.
“She’s dead!”
“Then tell me where you buried her.”
Her eyes betrayed her.
Not toward the door.
Toward the table.
Daniel followed the glance.
A woman lay beneath a white surgical sheet.
Dr. Reed stepped immediately in front of him.
Eleanor Hale, Daniel’s family attorney, stood near the monitors looking more frightened than surprised.
“What’s under that sheet?”
Nobody answered.
Daniel moved.
Reed tried to block him.
Daniel shoved past.
Vanessa lunged after him.
“Daniel, don’t!”
He grabbed the sheet and pulled just enough to reveal a woman’s hand.
Then everything inside him stopped.
On her finger was a narrow antique gold ring set with a tiny blue stone.
Ava’s ring.
The one Daniel had given her fourteen years earlier.
The one she had worn every day of their marriage.
Vanessa whispered:
“Ava never died.”
Daniel stared at the hand.
Then the fingers moved.
They closed hard around his wrist.
Daniel recoiled.
Under the sheet, the woman whispered:
“You still don’t know who I am.”
His rage disappeared.
He reached again.
Dr. Reed shouted:
“Don’t uncover her face!”
Daniel turned.
“Why?”
Reed hesitated.
Vanessa looked ready to collapse.
Then Daniel noticed something else.
Ava had always worn that ring on her left hand.
The woman under the sheet wore it on her right.
And beneath the band was a thin white scar Daniel had never seen on Ava in fourteen years.
He looked at Vanessa.
“Who is she?”
Vanessa whispered:
“That depends on which name you believe.”

And for the first time, Daniel realized he might not be looking for a missing wife.
He might be looking at the reason she disappeared.
