Chapter 6 - Charles’s Last Insurance Policy
Charles Mercer’s final months had been private.
Cancer.
Morphine.
Regret.
Daniel remembered a weaker man than the titan everyone else saw.
One night Charles told him:
“Companies don’t die from mistakes. They die from people who decide mistakes must stay hidden.”
Daniel thought it was general wisdom.
Now it sounded like confession.
Case 0419 contained device fragments from V-17 trial, handwritten investigator notes, and one sealed envelope.

Daniel laughed bitterly.
His father trusted his daughter-in-law more than his son.
Eleanor explained why.
Ava had confronted Charles with forged-release evidence.
Instead of denying, Charles gave her access to private restitution records.
He asked her to finish what he lacked courage to do publicly.
Ava agreed—but only if she controlled evidence independently.
Then Charles created a protected fund.
Initial value:
$12 million.
It grew.
Current estimate:
$41.8 million.
Purpose:
Compensate V-17 families and others whose claims were suppressed or improperly settled.
Daniel had never known.
Who controlled?
Ava.
Then two months before disappearance, Ava moved control.
To Vanessa.
Daniel turned.
“So you do control forty million dollars.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I’m temporary protector. I can’t spend it personally.”
“Why you?”
“Because Ava stopped trusting anyone with Mercer in their name.”
Daniel absorbed insult.
Maybe deserved.
Then Eleanor opened Charles’s envelope under authority of estate counsel.
Inside:
One letter.
Ava,
If Evelyn is alive, she has the second ledger.
If she is dead, someone else does.
Do not trust the release.
Do not trust my board.
And do not trust the ring unless it is on the wrong hand.
Daniel looked toward operating room.
Wrong hand.
Right hand.
Exactly.
Charles knew the ring.
How?
It wasn’t originally Ava’s.
Daniel had purchased it from an estate dealer.
Charles recognized after wedding.
He never told Daniel.
Why?
Because ring had belonged to Margaret Vale.
V-17.
The patient harmed in Mercer’s trial.
Daniel felt the floor shift.
Ava’s wedding ring had once belonged to the woman at center of his father’s hidden scandal.
Coincidence?
Maybe not.
Then Charles’s letter continued:
The ring has a compartment.
Margaret hid the location of the second ledger inside it.
Daniel stared at band.
No obvious compartment.
Reed examined.
There was microscopic seam near sapphire setting.
But opening risked damage.
Then woman beneath sheet sent message through nurse.
“Ask Daniel if he remembers where he bought the ring.”
Boston.
Estate dealer.
Which estate?
The paperwork had said anonymous medical estate liquidation.
Seller initials:
E.V.
Daniel went cold.
Evelyn Vale had sold her mother’s ring.

And the woman under the sheet claimed Daniel still didn’t know who she was.
