Chapter 10 - Daniel Reed

Dr. Samuel Reed had a son.

Daniel Reed.

Born same year as Daniel Mercer.

Died at age nineteen in an accident unrelated to trial.

Why was his name in ledger?

Reed reluctantly explained.

His wife had participated in an observational branch of Mercer study after complications during pregnancy.

Daniel Reed was listed as dependent.

No injury.

No claim.

But ledger later showed payment to “Daniel Reed” of $2.8 million.

Impossible.

He was dead before payment.

So someone used dead young man’s identity to move money.

Where?

A shell charity.

Then from shell charity into Vale Restoration.

This made it look like restitution to V-17 family.

But $2.8 million never reached Evelyn.

Where did it end?

An investment account controlled by Vanessa’s father.

Thomas Cole.

Vanessa stared.

“My father?”

She claimed ignorance.

Thomas had been Mercer Biomedical finance director.

He died six years ago.

Could he be mastermind?

Maybe.

Records showed he authorized multiple coded settlements.

Then Vanessa broke.

She had discovered father’s ledger after his death.

That was how she learned Ava’s investigation.

Thomas had siphoned some restitution payments for years, rationalizing he was “temporarily borrowing” to cover company liquidity.

Most repaid.

$2.8 million remained missing.

Vanessa secretly sold inherited property and repaid $1.9 million into fund.

Remaining $900,000 unresolved.

She hid because exposing father would stain family.

Another silence.

Then Daniel asked whether Ava knew.

“Yes.”

“Did she forgive you?”

“No.”

“Did she trust you with forty million anyway?”

“Not because she trusted me. Because she made structure where I couldn’t steal it.”

That distinction mattered.

Then page seven of second ledger might expose Thomas’s scheme.

If patient is Evelyn and holds original, she can verify.

But why Dr. Reed helped hide patient?

Because his dead son’s identity had been used.

He wanted truth authenticated before public release destroyed his family’s memory.

Not heroic purity.

Personal stakes.

Then Eleanor found $900,000 missing.

It hadn’t vanished.

It sat in escrow account created by Ava.

Label:

FINAL V17 CORRECTION.

She had recovered it.

So no current stolen money.

The real issue was historical laundering and false records.

Then Daniel received call.

Independent lab had completed preliminary identity analysis using dental imaging and old hospital scans.

Result could identify patient.

Reed refused tell him until patient consented.

Patient did.

But instead of report, she sent Daniel a handwritten question:

If I am Evelyn Vale, why did Ava give me her ring yesterday?

Daniel frowned.

Obvious answer: signal.

Then second line:

If I am Ava Mercer, why does Evelyn’s dental record match my jaw?

Impossible.

Daniel stared.

Two identities had somehow been mixed medically.

Not biologically.

Records.

Someone had deliberately switched Evelyn and Ava’s medical files.

And why?
