Chapter 13 - The Name on Her Wrist

Not romantic.

Not secret lovers.

Evelyn had undergone years of recovery after addiction and reconstructive surgeries.

At her lowest point, Ava helped her enter long-term treatment.

During that period, Evelyn wanted tattoo representing promise not to disappear again.

She tattooed:

AVA — ASK BEFORE YOU RUN.

A private phrase.

Strange but deeply personal.

Ava objected to her name being used.

Evelyn did it anyway.

If patient had tattoo, strong identity clue.

Daniel asked Reed.

He refused reveal until patient ready.

Then independent trust review found something bigger.

Board had indeed attempted to reclaim reserve.

Who initiated?

Eleanor.

Again.

She believed unused funds could legally revert once claim periods expired.

Ava disagreed because concealment prevented claimants from knowing they had rights.

That was core dispute.

Eleanor wasn’t stealing personally.

She was applying narrow legal interpretation favoring company.

Ava viewed morally corrupt.

Daniel would have probably sided Eleanor at time.

Now, after everything, he didn’t.

He signed irrevocable agreement keeping restitution independent.

That was first real change.

Then Vanessa said:

“Ava asked me to watch what you did.”

Daniel laughed.

“So this whole thing was a test?”

“No.”

“Feels like one.”

“It was a safeguard.”

He hated word.

Still.

Then patient requested Daniel come alone.

Reed allowed.

Face still covered.

Daniel sat beside her.

“Are you Evelyn?”

She answered:

“What will change if I say yes?”

“I stop wondering whether my wife is under that sheet.”

“That’s about you.”

Daniel closed eyes.

Fair.

“Then tell me what you need.”

The woman was silent.

Then:

“I need you to stop treating Ava like evidence that belongs to you.”

Daniel’s anger rose and fell.

“Is she alive?”

“Yes.”

The first direct confirmation.

Daniel nearly cried.

“Where?”

“She doesn’t want you to know yet.”

Pain.

Then woman moved left hand from beneath sheet.

Bandage around wrist.

She peeled edge back.

Letters appeared.

A V A

Daniel exhaled.

Evelyn.

Almost certainly.

Then she whispered:

“But that isn’t the secret you came here for.”

“What is?”

“Why I needed surgery now.”

Her old reconstruction had been failing?

No.

She had chosen procedure to remove something embedded under scar tissue from original accident.

A tiny metal capsule.

Placed fifteen years ago.

“What was inside?”

“Nothing.”

Daniel frowned.

“It was already empty.”

“Who emptied it?”

“Ava.”

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“What was supposed to be inside?”

Evelyn whispered:

“The original V-17 identification chip.”

If gone, identity proof compromised.

Who has it?

Ava.

Why take?

Because chip did not identify Margaret Vale as V-17.

It identified someone else.

Daniel stared.

All records they built story on might be wrong.

The ring had belonged Margaret.

Ledger linked Vale family.

But V-17 patient could have been another woman.

Then who?

May you like

Evelyn said:

“That’s why Ava disappeared again.”
