Chapter 4 - Eleanor’s Signature

Daniel turned slowly.

“Eleanor?”

She did not deny it.

Fifteen years earlier, Eleanor Hale had been junior counsel on the Mercer settlement team.

Charles demanded the V-17 matter close before an acquisition.

Margaret Vale had already died.

Evelyn refused to release claims.

Then one morning Eleanor received a signed release through internal courier.

She processed it.

Years later, Ava discovered signature was forged.

“You knew?”

Daniel asked.

“No.”

“Did you check?”

“No.”

That answer hurt more.

Eleanor had trusted internal paperwork because Charles wanted speed.

The acquisition closed.

V-17 disappeared from active litigation.

Charles later discovered discrepancy.

Instead of exposing scandal, he created private restitution fund.

Cowardice disguised as repair.

Then Ava found.

“She confronted me,” Eleanor admitted.

“When?”

“Two years before she vanished.”

“And you didn’t tell me.”

“She asked me not to.”

Daniel laughed.

Everyone obeyed Ava except her husband.

Then Vanessa explained why Ava searched Evelyn.

If Evelyn’s release was forged, her family could claim part of the technology value Mercer built using V-17’s case data and clinical corrections.

Potentially tens of millions.

But Ava also believed Evelyn possessed something more important.

A second patient ledger.

One that showed V-17 was not an isolated failure.

“How many patients?”

Daniel asked.

Eleanor answered:

“At least nine.”

Then Daniel felt sick.

His father had built a company empire on technology he believed imperfect, but not this compromised.

Was Charles a monster?

Eleanor said no.

Not clean.

Not innocent.

But not simple.

He funded restitution because he knew company had buried too much.

Then Dr. Reed entered.

“The patient is awake.”

Daniel stood.

“Can she speak?”

“Yes.”

“Can I see her?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“She refuses until one condition is met.”

“What condition?”

Reed held out the antique ring.

“The engraving has to be fully cleaned first.”

Daniel stared.

“What does the engraving have to do with her face?”

Reed answered:

“She said if you read it before seeing her, you might understand why she’s wearing Ava’s ring.”

Then Vanessa whispered:

“And why Ava gave it away.”

Daniel froze.

“Ava gave her that ring?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

Daniel’s heart hammered.

“Then Ava is alive.”

Vanessa did not answer.

May you like

But this time, her silence sounded like fear for Ava.

Not guilt.
