Chapter 3 - The Woman Charles Mercer Erased
The first official file on V-17 contained only twelve pages.
Most names were redacted.
A clinical trial.
An implanted cardiac-monitoring device.
A software defect.
False alarms.
Unnecessary procedures.
No deaths attributed directly to the device.
No criminal finding.
Then an internal memo:
V-17 has rejected final confidentiality terms.
The patient’s representative is threatening external disclosure.
Representative.
Not patient.
Daniel asked Eleanor:
“Who represented her?”
Eleanor said she didn’t know.
That was a lie.
Daniel recognized her pause.
“You were my father’s lawyer.”
“I joined later.”
“You knew enough to recognize the code.”
She finally admitted she had reviewed settlement cleanup after Charles became ill.
V-17’s real name was sealed even from many company executives.
But one person had spent years looking.
Ava.
Daniel remembered her late-night work.
Folders she closed when he entered.
Arguments about Mercer Biomedical’s old culture.
He thought she disliked his father.
He never realized she was investigating him.
Then Eleanor found a transfer.
$4.7 million from Charles Mercer’s private account to a trust called Vale Restoration.
Trust beneficiary:
Margaret Vale.
Deceased.
Daniel frowned.
If beneficiary had died, who received money?
Successor beneficiary:
Evelyn Vale.
No current address.
Vanessa went pale when she heard that name.
“Do you know her?”
“No.”
Another lie.
Then Daniel searched Ava’s private cloud.
Most files were deleted.
One photograph remained.
Ava stood beside Vanessa outside a rehabilitation clinic.
Between them was a woman whose face had been deliberately blurred.
Filename:
EVELYN — BEFORE RECONSTRUCTION.
Daniel stared.
“Vanessa.”
She looked down.
“She wasn’t supposed to survive.”
“Who?”
“Evelyn.”
“Survive what?”
“A car crash.”
Another crash.
Daniel’s mind raced.
Was Evelyn injured because of Mercer?
Vanessa shook her head.
“The accident was real. No one caused it.”
Then why hide her?
Because Evelyn was V-17’s daughter.
Her mother Margaret had been harmed by the failed Mercer trial.
Evelyn spent years trying to expose what happened.
Then she vanished after accepting part of Charles’s settlement.
Ava believed she had been bought.
Later she learned the truth.
Evelyn hadn’t disappeared with money.
She had disappeared because someone inside Mercer Biomedical had forged her signature on the final release.
Daniel stared.
“Who?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Ava thought it was your father.”
Daniel expected anger.
Instead something worse appeared.
Vanessa continued:
“Then she found proof it wasn’t Charles.”
“Who was it?”
