Chapter 9 - Beneficiary Silver
The fund was not enormous now.
With investment growth:
$4.8 million.
Enough to matter.
But not absurd empire.
More important was attached document.
SILVER beneficiary could access sealed archive deposited by Rebecca before death.
That archive was real reason medallion mattered.
Money was secondary.
To unlock archive legally required two things:
Physical medallion.
Name engraved inside hidden compartment.
So name functioned as password.
Now everyone had incentive to know.
Claire refused reading publicly.
After fourteen years of others violating privacy, she wouldn't repeat.
They arranged attorney, independent fiduciary and police documentation.
Vanessa demanded presence.
Claire said no.
Ethan requested because father involved.
Maybe.
Then fund documents revealed SILVER was not necessarily Claire.
Token bearer had no ownership.
They merely initiated identification.
Then somebody broke into hotel records room.
No valuables taken.
Only old April 17 staff log.
Who?
Security showed Lucas entering.
Ethan confronted brother.
Lucas admitted taking log.
Why?
Thomas’s note told him to destroy any record connecting him to Room 1508 if medallion returned.
Ethan was furious.
“You followed that?”
“I panicked.”
Lucas handed it back.
No destruction.
Log showed Thomas clocked out at 9:02.
Yet photograph at 10:14 showed him in lobby.
He returned off-duty.
Why?
Diane called him.
She needed help hiding something Rebecca gave her.
What?
Medallion.
So Thomas modified compartment that night.
Who dictated inscription?
Rebecca.
Before ambulance?
Impossible if she was unconscious at 8:17.
Unless she had prepared it earlier.
Laura said Rebecca knew she might be confronted.
She had written name on paper.
Diane gave paper to Thomas.
Thomas engraved.
Then whose name?
Still hidden.
Then toxicology review.
Rebecca’s death remained accidental.
Sedative was her own prescription.
No poisoning.
Good.
But why was she taking sedative before confrontation?
She had panic disorder.
Human detail.
Then hospital report showed Rebecca regained consciousness briefly in ambulance.
She said something to paramedic:
“Tell Diane… wrong daughter.”

Not phone call.

What did she mean?
Paramedic remembered additional phrase omitted from summary because nonsensical:
“Silver belongs to girl downstairs.”
Girl downstairs.
At 8:17, who was downstairs?
Claire?
No, she was at college.
Vanessa?
Seventeen years old.
Hotel records showed Vanessa attended foundation youth gala in lobby that night.
She was downstairs.
Was SILVER Vanessa?
But she was Richard’s confirmed daughter and wealthy.
Why secret fund?
Maybe not money.
Archive.
Rebecca wanted Vanessa to receive truth about father.
But father known.
Then guest list showed another teenage girl.
Name:
Sophie Lane.
Age fifteen.
Daughter of hotel housekeeper Maria Lane.
No relation to Victor investigator despite surname coincidence.
Sophie had disappeared from public records after that year.
Claire asked Ethan if he remembered.
He did.
“She was around hotel all the time.”
Then Ethan went pale.
“Sophie was my babysitter.”
A girl connected to Thomas.
Could be “girl downstairs.”
Where now?
Search found Sophie Lane died fifteen years ago.
Same date as Rebecca?
No.
Officially six months later.
Car accident.
Then medallion inscription might be Sophie.
Ethan whispered:
“That’s the name I thought I saw.”
Claire stared.
At lobby he said “she died here fifteen years ago.”
He had assumed Sophie because first visible letters looked like S-O.
But Sophie did not die at hotel.
So why had Ethan said “here”?
