Chapter 1 - The Bride Who Wouldn’t Let Claire Leave

Claire Bennett entered the Grand Ashbourne Hotel through the service corridor because the front doors had already been decorated for Vanessa Whitmore’s wedding.
She had not come to stop the ceremony.
She had come to leave something at reception.
Then Vanessa saw her.
Twenty minutes later, Claire was on the marble floor.
Her pale-gray blouse had torn at one shoulder. One side of her face throbbed where she had struck the edge of a service cart during the confrontation upstairs. Her knees burned against polished stone.
“Please…” Claire gasped. “Just let me leave.”
Vanessa kept walking.
The bride looked immaculate beneath the chandeliers, white gown floating behind her as if this were still the perfect wedding morning.
“You should've stayed gone.”
The guests near reception stared.
Nobody understood what they were seeing.
Neither did Ethan Cole, the hotel manager, who had just stepped from behind the desk.
Then Claire saw something on the floor.
Silver.
No larger than a coin.
Her pain vanished beneath recognition.
She crawled faster.
Vanessa followed her gaze.
For the first time, the bride looked frightened.
“Don't touch that.”
Claire reached.
Vanessa’s heel came down across her forearm.
Claire cried out.
That finally moved Ethan.
He rushed forward, separated them and tore the strip of fabric from Vanessa’s hand.
“Back away from her.”
“She crashed my wedding!”
But Ethan was already kneeling beside Claire.
That was when Claire saw the object beside his shoe.
She grabbed it.
An ornate silver medallion.
Its surface carried the Ashbourne crest.
Ethan stopped moving.
“Where did you get this?”
Claire opened it.
Inside was a tiny photograph.
A young woman stood beneath the same lobby chandelier.
Beside her was a much younger man in an Ashbourne bellman’s uniform.
Someone had scratched away the woman’s face.
Vanessa stopped arguing.
Her lips parted.
Claire saw it.
Fear.
She pressed the hidden catch her mother had once shown her.
A second compartment opened.
Claire’s thumb covered the inscription.
Ethan grabbed her wrist.
“That name…”
His face drained.
“She died here fifteen years ago.”
Claire slowly looked toward Vanessa.
And smiled.
Not because she knew the answer.
Because Vanessa believed she did.
Claire began moving her thumb.
Then Ethan whispered:
“Wait.”
Claire stopped.
“Why?”
Ethan wasn't looking at Vanessa anymore.
He was staring at the scratched photograph.
“The man standing beside her…”
May you like
His voice cracked.
“…is my father.”
