Claire stared.
“You knew Thomas might be your father and still planned marrying his son?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because Richard had proof Thomas wasn't.”
Where?
Richard claimed DNA test performed secretly when Vanessa was infant.
Result excluded Thomas.
Vanessa saw copy.
Then why not show Lucas?
Because obtaining child DNA without consent and preserving secret humiliated Eleanor.
Vanessa chose silence.
Again.
Ethan demanded document.
Vanessa retrieved from bridal suite.
Lab result.
Thomas excluded.
So no close relation.
But document was thirty-two years old.
Could verify lab archive.
Eventually confirmed authentic.
Thomas was not Vanessa’s father.
Relief.
Then Claire wondered whether Thomas was hers.
Diane had preserved Thomas hair in old envelope?
No.
But Ethan/Lucas could provide comparison.
Claire chose test.
Result:
No half-sibling relationship.
Thomas not Claire’s father.
One candidate gone.
Richard?
Whitmore sample from stored medical tissue existed with estate consent provisions.
Vanessa authorized comparison.
Result pending.
Then Lucas confronted Vanessa about knowing paternity uncertainty.
“You were going to marry me without telling me?”
“You weren't at risk.”
“You decided that for me.”
Core pattern again.
Lucas canceled wedding.
Not necessarily relationship forever.
Vanessa screamed at Claire.
“You ruined everything.”
Claire answered:
“No. The medallion didn't create your secret.”
Vanessa looked like she might strike her.
Then stopped.
For first time, she controlled herself.
Good.
Then Richard comparison returned.
Claire was not his daughter.
Vanessa was.
So Richard spent decades believing wrong possibility.
Why put Claire in fund?
Guilt toward Diane.
Because his pressure around paternity had damaged her marriage temporarily.
Robert later accepted Claire as daughter regardless.
Richard paid tuition secretly.
Question answered.
But Rebecca’s “wrong daughter” statement?
If Claire wasn't Richard’s, maybe Rebecca discovered that.
Then why “wrong daughter,” not “Claire isn't his”?
Laura remembered fuller sentence:
“Richard has been protecting the wrong daughter.”
Different meaning.
Protecting Vanessa?
Or Claire?
Which daughter needed protection?
Then Child Continuity Fund audit showed $1.3m remaining wasn't for seven beneficiaries.
It was reserved for one contingent beneficiary coded:
SILVER.
No name.
Eligibility triggered if silver medallion returned.
Claire stared at object.
The medallion wasn't just evidence.
It was key to identifying eighth beneficiary.
