Chapter 6 - The Groom
Vanessa was marrying Ethan’s brother.
That transformed hotel from coincidence into convergence.
Lucas Cole, thirty-four.
Attorney.
Thomas Cole’s eldest son.
Vanessa claimed they met three years ago through charity board.
Maybe true.
But Richard Whitmore encouraged relationship.
Why would wealthy Richard encourage daughter marrying son of employee who helped conceal Rebecca’s death?
Eleanor answered reluctantly:
“Because Thomas had something Richard wanted.”
The medallion.
Richard searched for it for fifteen years.
Never found.
Thomas hid it.
After Thomas died, belongings divided between sons.
Ethan received tools.
Lucas received old trunk.
Medallion wasn't there.
Richard suspected Diane.
Correct.
Somehow Diane eventually obtained it.
But Vanessa had it before Claire arrived.
How?
Vanessa said Diane mailed it to her.
One week before death.
Claire froze.
“My mother sent you that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Package contained no letter.
Only medallion.
Vanessa panicked.
She knew father’s obsession.
She planned bringing it to hotel on wedding day to ask Eleanor privately.
Then Claire appeared.
Vanessa assumed Diane had told her everything.
Hence “You should've stayed gone.”
Gone from what?
Vanessa admitted she and Claire had met before.
Claire didn't remember.
Five years earlier, at fundraiser.
Brief introduction.
Nothing.
So phrase wasn't literal exile.
It meant Claire should have remained outside Whitmore affairs.
Still cruel.
Then Claire asked why Vanessa dragged her rather than call security.
Vanessa's behavior had crossed line.
No justification.
Vanessa admitted panic and anger.
She feared Claire would expose father during wedding.
Again image mattered more than person.
Then Lucas returned.
He saw Claire bruised.
Saw Vanessa.
Saw medallion.
And said:
“You found Dad’s token.”
Ethan stared.
“You knew?”
Lucas had searched Thomas’s belongings after death.
Thomas left note:
If silver token returns to Ashbourne, do not open it there.
Why?
No explanation.
Lucas believed token linked to father’s shame.
He never told Ethan because Ethan idolized Thomas.
Another protective lie.
Then Lucas looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know?”
“Some.”
“How much?”
“Enough to know your father helped mine.”
“Helped him do what?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Keep Rebecca quiet.”
Ethan snapped.
“Rebecca died.”
“Before she died.”
Rebecca had agreed not to expose fund.
Why?
Richard promised return diverted money and preserve beneficiaries.
Did he?
Partly.
$2.1 million restored.
$1.3 million remained in Child Continuity Fund.
Rebecca apparently approved leaving it.
Why would whistleblower approve?
Because fund beneficiaries were legitimate.
Only funding method improper.
Then Lucas, as attorney, asked to see beneficiary list.
Eleanor refused.
Phoebe-like external counsel obtained court-supervised review.
Seven beneficiaries.
Names sealed.
All received education/medical support.
No obvious relation.
Except one.
Claire Bennett.
Claire stared.
She had never received money from Whitmore.
Records said $86,400 paid for her college tuition fifteen years ago.
Claire’s father had always said scholarship.
Payment actually came from Ashbourne Child Continuity Fund.
She looked at Eleanor.
“Why was I in that fund?”
Eleanor cried.
“I don't know.”
Vanessa looked away.
Claire saw.
“You do.”
