Chapter 5 - Eleanor’s Mistake

Claire stood.

“You knew my mother?”

Eleanor realized too late.

She tried recovering.

“Years ago.”

“How?”

Whitmore Foundation.

Eleanor chaired it.

Diane handled grants.

Rebecca handled accounting.

Then why surprise Diane had daughter?

Claire had been twenty at time.

Surely personnel file?

Eleanor claimed she never knew personal lives.

Weak.

Then she saw Ethan.

“Thomas’s boy.”

Ethan stiffened.

“You knew my father too?”

Everyone knew Thomas at hotel.

But Eleanor's tone was personal.

Then Claire asked what happened April 17.

Eleanor sat.

“Rebecca confronted Richard.”

About what?

Whitmore Foundation funds.

Rebecca found $3.4 million transferred into shell charities over four years.

She suspected Richard.

She arranged meeting.

Diane came as backup.

Thomas helped them enter private suite.

At some point Rebecca became ill.

Natural cardiac event?

Toxicology then found sedative in system.

Prescription medication.

Not lethal alone.

Death ruled accidental interaction with undiagnosed heart condition.

No homicide.

Then why falsify location?

Eleanor said Richard panicked.

He feared scandal.

Rebecca became ill in bridal suite.

Richard ordered staff move her to Room 1508 before ambulance.

Thomas refused initially.

Then complied.

Ethan stared.

“My father moved dying woman?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Eleanor looked ashamed.

“Richard threatened his job.”

Ethan’s image of father changed.

Not murderer.

But participant in cover-up.

Then Claire asked where Diane was.

“She left before ambulance.”

Why?

Eleanor said she didn't know.

Then Laura interrupted:

“That's a lie.”

Diane stayed until after 10 p.m.

Photograph proved.

So Eleanor knew.

Then Claire asked what VIP medallion had to do with money.

It contained microfilm?

No.

Safe key?

No.

Just token.

Except hidden compartment.

Ethan inspected craftsmanship.

Not original hotel design.

Someone modified it.

Who?

Thomas.

Ethan recognized his father’s engraving tools.

Thomas repaired watches as hobby.

He could have created compartment.

Then Claire asked why medallion belonged to Richard.

Because Thomas stole it after Rebecca’s death.

He believed it might prove Richard present.

But Richard’s presence already logged.

Not enough.

Maybe hidden compartment contained something else.

The name.

Ethan had recognized it as dead woman.

Why?

He had seen staff memorial records.

But he never read it.

Only first letters visible around Claire’s thumb.

He thought he recognized pattern.

So even Ethan’s statement at lobby—“she died here fifteen years ago”—had been assumption.

Important.

Nobody had actually read full inscription.

Then Eleanor asked Claire:

“Did Diane tell you what Rebecca found?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“Why good?”

Eleanor looked at Vanessa.

Because stolen foundation money wasn't central secret.

Rebecca discovered where money went.

Richard had not taken it personally.

He had transferred millions into something called Ashbourne Child Continuity Fund.

Claire almost laughed at absurd name.

Beneficiaries sealed.

Why would charity money fund children?

Eleanor whispered:

“Because Richard was paying for mistakes.”

Whose mistakes?

No answer.

Then Vanessa snapped:

“Mom, stop.”

Claire looked at bride.

“You know.”

Vanessa said:

“I know enough.”

“How?”

“My father told me before he died.”

Richard Whitmore died two years ago.

His final instruction to Vanessa:

Get medallion before wedding.

“Why before wedding?”

Vanessa's silence returned.

Then Eleanor whispered:

“Because once Vanessa married…”

She stopped.

Claire looked at her.

“Once she married whom?”

Vanessa’s fiancé had not appeared during lobby confrontation.

Where was groom?

Guests said he had left after chaos.

His name:

May you like

Lucas Cole.

Ethan’s older brother.
