Chapter 4 - Two Women Named Rebecca

Photograph was authentic.

Paper dating.

Ink.

No manipulation except scratched face.

Timestamp from hotel’s promotional camera print system.

10:14 p.m.

So woman beside Thomas was alive after Rebecca’s recorded medical emergency.

Ethan found ambulance log.

At 8:29, paramedics transported female from Ashbourne.

Patient registered:

Rebecca Shaw.

At hospital she died.

Therefore woman at 10:14 wasn't Rebecca.

Someone had deliberately wanted photograph to look connected.

Who scratched face?

Unknown.

Claire began suspecting Diane.

Then Laura arrived.

She saw Claire and stopped.

“You look like her.”

“Rebecca?”

“No.”

“Who?”

Laura avoided answer.

Claire was tired of people doing that.

She put medallion on table.

“Tell me.”

Laura opened photograph.

Her hand shook.

“That isn't Rebecca.”

Confirmed.

“Then who?”

“I don't know.”

Claire stared.

“You said I look like her.”

“I said you look like someone.”

“Who?”

Laura swallowed.

“Your mother.”

Of course Claire resembled Diane.

Meaningless.

Except Diane had blonde hair in every photograph Claire remembered.

Woman in medallion looked brunette.

Claire was brunette.

Diane had dyed her hair blonde for thirty years.

Could be Diane.

Claire’s pulse rose.

“Is that my mother?”

Laura whispered:

“I think so.”

Then Thomas was photographed with Diane two hours after Rebecca’s emergency.

Why?

Ethan asked if Thomas and Diane knew each other.

Laura said yes.

Very well.

Claire felt another foundation crack.

“How well?”

“They were engaged.”

Before Claire’s father?

“Yes.”

Twenty-two years earlier.

Claire never knew.

Why relationship ended?

Thomas took hotel job.

Diane married Robert Bennett.

Thomas later married Ethan’s mother.

Ordinary old romance.

Maybe.

Then Laura revealed Diane contacted Thomas after Rebecca discovered financial irregularities.

Thomas was trusted employee.

He agreed helping retrieve hotel records.

So photograph could show allies.

Then Claire asked:

“Who scratched my mother’s face?”

Laura looked toward Vanessa.

Vanessa exploded.

“Stop looking at me!”

Interesting.

Claire had not accused aloud.

Then Ethan examined back of photograph.

Faint embossed code.

VIP-17.

Same symbol on medallion.

Ashbourne VIP medallions were not jewelry.

They were old private-access tokens given to select guests before digital key systems.

Each contained guest identifier.

This one:

VIP-17.

Who held it?

Archive listed token assigned to Richard Whitmore.

Vanessa’s father.

Vanessa said impossible.

Her father never stayed there.

Ethan found seventeen reservations.

All under corporate account.

Then final reservation:

April 17, fifteen years ago.

Room?

Not 1508.

Private bridal suite.

The same suite Vanessa had been preparing in that morning.

Claire looked at bride.

“You chose this hotel.”

“Yes.”

“You chose this ballroom.”

“Yes.”

“Did you choose that suite?”

Vanessa didn't answer.

Ethan checked booking notes.

Vanessa had specifically requested it.

Then Claire understood.

Vanessa wasn't accidentally getting married where woman died.

She had deliberately returned to exact place connected to medallion.

But why?

Then elevator opened.

Eleanor Whitmore stepped out.

Vanessa’s mother saw silver object.

Her handbag dropped.

“My God.”

She looked at Claire.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Diane had a daughter?”
