Chapter 9 - Diane Morgan
Diane was located at a rental cottage in Maine.
Leo was not there.
She surrendered.
Where was he?
“With people I trust.”
“Who?”
“I won’t say until I know Ethan won’t take him away from everything he knows.”
Ethan almost laughed.
“He is my son.”
“And a stranger to you.”
“That is not my fault.”
“No. It’s Emily’s.”
That was first adult besides Ethan willing to say it plainly.
Diane loved her daughter.
She also believed Emily’s secrecy became wrong.
When did Diane learn?
After Emily died, she found safe-deposit key.
Inside Leo photographs, letters and Daniel’s legal documents.
Why wait eighteen months?
She tried following Emily’s instructions initially.
Then discovered Rachel intended move overseas with Leo for work.
Diane panicked.
She forged reunification because she feared losing him permanently.
Wrong.
But motive understandable.
Where did she move Leo?
To a child therapist and temporary licensed host family.
Not secret basement.
Not abusive home.
Diane wanted prepare him to meet Ethan and Noah gradually.
Host family identified.
Leo safe.
Then Ethan asked:
“Why hasn’t anyone brought him to me now?”
Because Leo believed his father was dead.
Emily told him so.
Actually at age three he may understand little but enough.
Rachel reinforced story indirectly.
Therapists advised abrupt reunion could overwhelm him.
Ethan agreed not to storm in.
That was growth.
He asked:
“Can I see him through glass?”
Yes.
He watched Leo play with toy cars.
Noah loved cars too.
Leo laughed.
Same dimple.
Ethan cried silently.
Then therapist explained Leo had one recurring statement:
“Mommy said Daddy couldn’t know because Daddy would get sick.”
What did that mean?
Emily had told child simplified version.
Maybe original anonymous threats said Ethan would “lose everything.”
But why get sick?
Diane found Emily’s final journal.
One entry:
I finally know what Leo’s birth was really meant to trigger.
Not money.
Not Marcus.
Not the audit.
It was Ethan’s medical file.
Ethan frowned.
“What medical file?”
He had no major condition.
Then Emily wrote:
If Leo is registered under Carter Line A, the reserve audit cross-checks the founder’s restricted health archive.
Why would family trust hold health archive?
Because reserve paid medical costs.
Old beneficiaries’ records attached.
One record:
ETHAN CARTER — AGE 17 — CONFIDENTIAL.
Ethan had no memory of treatment at seventeen beyond car accident.
Diane looked uneasy.
“Your father once said there was something about that accident you didn’t know.”
Ethan stared.
Could this be new mystery? But current arc still must solve drink/brother/Claire. This can become separate mystery at Ch15 end perhaps. Need not unravel now. Emily may have thought threat involved it, but later discovered it wasn't source. Keep distinct final.
Then therapist said Leo had another memory:
“Aunt Claire brought me red drink.”
Claire?
She said never met him.
Ethan slowly turned.
