Chapter 5 - Nine Missing Days
Marcus did not deny it.
“I drove them.”
“Where?”
“To a rental house outside Boston.”
“Why?”
“Emily asked.”
“You knew my son was alive.”
“Yes.”
“And let me mourn him.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Ethan wanted to hit him.
Instead he asked:
“Why?”
Marcus explained Emily had found old Carter trust clause.
Leo’s birth triggered review of ownership in one family investment vehicle called Carter Children’s Reserve.
Not control of entire company.
Not instant fortune.
A restricted trust worth about $6 million, divided among future descendants for education, disability care, and medical emergencies.
Leo would have been beneficiary.
Why hide him?
Because one dormant trust provision contained a problem.
If first male child of Ethan’s branch survived thirty days, the reserve underwent independent audit of all historical distributions.
Someone feared audit.
Who?
Marcus did not know at first.
Then he admitted:
“I had taken money.”
Ethan stared.
Not millions.
Twenty-two years earlier Marcus borrowed $480,000 from reserve through an improperly authorized bridge loan to prevent Carter & Vale payroll collapse.
He repaid principal.
But not all lost investment earnings.
David Carter later discovered.
Rather than expose partner, he required Marcus to repay through structured contributions.
Mostly completed.
But audit would reveal concealment.
Marcus feared reputation and legal consequences.
Did he threaten Emily?
“No.”
“Did you send messages?”
“No.”
“Did you break into my apartment?”
“No.”
“Then why help hide Leo?”
“Because Emily confronted me. I confessed. She thought someone else was involved.”
Who?
A trust administrator had been manipulating records after David’s death.
Marcus believed Emily could expose that if given time.
He helped her leave with Leo temporarily.
It was cowardice mixed with cooperation.
Then what happened after rental house?
Marcus stayed one night.
Emily planned to tell Ethan once she proved who sent threats.
Next morning Claire arrived.
She saw Emily holding baby.
Did she learn it was Leo then?
Claire’s story cracked.
“Yes.”
Ethan stared.
“So you’ve known for three years.”
Claire cried.
“I knew he survived birth.”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“How can you not know?”
“Because after three days, Emily moved him again.”
“Where?”
“She wouldn’t tell me.”
Why?
Emily had become suspicious of everyone.
Even Claire.
Because anonymous sender knew rental address.
Message:
YOU HAVE 24 HOURS TO REMOVE LEO FROM CARTER RECORDS.
That meant leak came from someone close.
Emily left.
She took Leo.
Then called Claire two days later.
“I found a place.”
“What place?”
“I can’t tell you.”
That was Claire’s last confirmed contact with Leo.
Then one week later Emily returned home to Ethan.
Without baby.
What did she tell him?
Nothing.
She acted as though Leo had died.
And Ethan, shattered, never questioned.
Then Claire said:
“She came home because someone convinced her Leo would be safer if even you believed he was dead.”
“Who convinced her?”
Claire whispered:
“I always thought it was Marcus.”
Marcus shook his head.
“It wasn’t me.”
Then Ethan asked the question that mattered.
“Did Leo survive thirty days?”
Claire looked away.
“I don’t know.”
Marcus answered:
“Yes.”
Ethan turned.
