Chapter 10 - The Other “Aunt Claire”
Leo’s therapist showed him photographs.
Claire Morgan.
He shook head.
“Not her.”
So toddler term was generic.
Who was “Aunt Claire”?
He pointed to Rachel Moore.
Rachel had told him children at Haven called all nurses “Aunt.”
One nurse named Clara.
Not Claire.
Leo pronounced “Caya.”
Misheard by therapist.
No contradiction.
Claire still had never met him.
Then Ethan finally asked why Claire had forced Noah to drink Leo’s old formula.
Her earlier explanation—comparing stomach tolerance—was not enough.
She admitted fuller truth.
Anonymous package contained one opened hospital record:
LEO CARTER — METABOLIC SCREEN REPEAT REQUIRED.
Claire became terrified Noah might share inherited disorder.
She had recently noticed Noah vomiting milk.
Instead of calling pediatrician, she tried old hydrolyzed formula from package.
Why hide label?
Because if Ethan saw Leo’s name, secret exploded before she knew whether Leo alive.
“That was reckless.”
“Yes.”
“Cruel.”
“Yes.”
“Why press his head down?”
Claire cried.
“He kept refusing. I lost my temper.”
No secret medical necessity justified it.
Then Noah was tested properly.
He had ordinary lactose sensitivity.
Nothing severe.
Leo’s metabolic repeat had also been normal.
So “what she made Noah drink” was old specialized formula, not poison.
Then who sent package?
Diane.
She admitted.
Why anonymously?
To force Claire to tell Ethan.
She knew Claire was estate executor and had suppressed Leo items.
Diane mailed cartons and photograph.
She wrote note imitating Emily’s style? Not intentionally; handwriting family resemblance? Earlier we said handwriting analysis Emily but Emily dead. Better resolve as tracing/copy. Diane copied sentence from Emily journal, causing resemblance. Yes.
Diane wanted Claire to crack.
Instead Claire concealed package and misused formula.
Why not send directly to Ethan?
Diane feared he would immediately involve police and disrupt her plan to move Leo.
Again manipulation.
So current labyrinth had no omnipotent mastermind.
Different people hid truth for different reasons.
Original threat sender still unresolved.
Did someone truly threaten Emily during pregnancy?
Marcus denied.
Helen denied.
Nathan? unrelated.
Diane didn’t know.
Daniel investigated years ago and found messages originated from prepaid phone bought by:
Emily herself.
Ethan stared.
“What?”
Emily sent threats to herself?
Not exactly.
Store footage showed Emily purchasing prepaid phone.
Why?
She used it to contact Marcus anonymously while testing whether he would react to trust audit.
She may have authored some messages as investigative bait.
But apartment break-in?
Police report showed no forced entry.
Could Emily have staged?
Her journal answered.
I tore the ultrasound myself after I found Marcus’s reserve records. I needed Claire to take the threat seriously.
Ethan stared in disbelief.
Emily had manufactured parts of danger.
Why?
She was convinced trust concealment meant someone would target Leo.
She wanted Claire’s cooperation.
Then did real threats ever exist?
One.
After Leo birth, rental-house address received message:
REMOVE LEO FROM CARTER RECORDS.
That one was not Emily.
Phone trace eventually led to Helen Price.
Helen admitted.
She feared audit revealing her improper cancellation practices and Marcus’s historical loan.
She wanted Leo removed from trust records—not physically harmed.
Her wording sounded threatening.
Emily interpreted worst.
So true threat was financial/control intimidation.
Not murder plot.
Emily escalated it into lifelong concealment.
Ethan’s grief turned complicated.
His wife had been frightened.
Manipulative.
Protective.
Wrong.
Then Diane handed Ethan final portion of Emily journal.
If I ever die before telling Ethan, Claire has the cartons.
Claire didn’t.
Diane had them.
Why did Emily believe Claire would?
Because she had placed them in Claire’s storage locker before death.
Diane removed them after Emily died.
Then mailed back later.
So Claire’s initial “I found them in storage” contained part truth, later distorted.
The last journal line about Leo:
I’m bringing him home after his third birthday.
Leo turned three two months ago.
Exactly when Diane took him from Rachel.
Emily had planned reunion but died before.
Diane tried complete plan herself.
Wrong way.
But for first time Ethan understood:
Leo was always supposed to come back.
