Daniel did not run.
He arrived with counsel.
“Yes, I called clinic.”
“Why?”
“Emily instructed me years ago to conduct annual welfare verification.”
“You knew Leo was alive.”
“Yes.”
Ethan’s fury sharpened.
“How many people knew?”
“Fewer than you think.”
“Enough.”
Daniel knew Leo survived.
He knew Emily hid him.
He helped build legal protection.
Why not tell Ethan after Emily died?
Because Emily’s written directive said disclose only if one of three conditions occurred:
Leo required life-saving treatment needing paternal consent.

Leo turned five.
None had happened.
“That directive was unethical.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
“Illegal?”
“Parts were challengeable.”

“Yes.”
Did Daniel take Leo from Rachel?
“No.”
He called because annual verification was due.
He learned Leo had been removed.

Emily Carter.
Still holding funds after death.
Estate subaccount used for confidential childcare.

Claire.
Claire stared.
“I didn’t authorize it.”

She was executor of Emily’s personal estate.

Thus Julia paid herself from Emily childcare account to remove Leo.
Why?

Police found her in motel.

But claimed child willingly handed to “grandmother.”
