Chapter 2 - Leo Carter

Ethan did not open the carton.

Police did.

The liquid inside was a commercially manufactured pediatric nutritional formula.

No poison.

No sedative.

No medication.

Nothing inherently dangerous.

But it had expired nearly two years earlier.

Claire had been forcing Noah to drink an old hospital supplement intended for another child.

That alone was enough to enrage Ethan.

But the label mattered more.

The full hospital sticker read:

LEO CARTER

Date of Birth:

April 18, 2023

Ethan stared.

Emily’s pregnancy ended April 17.

He had been told Leo never took a breath.

There should never have been a date of birth.

Only fetal-loss documentation.

Yet here was a hospital nutrition label created the next day for a living pediatric patient.

Claire sat across from investigators.

“It doesn’t mean what you think.”

“What does it mean?”

“I don’t know.”

“You covered the label.”

“Yes.”

“You told Noah it belonged to his big brother.”

Claire looked down.

“I shouldn’t have said that.”

“Was Leo alive?”

Silence.

Ethan stood.

“Was my son alive?”

Claire whispered:

“For a little while.”

The room went silent.

Ethan could barely breathe.

“How long?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

“You knew for three years?”

“No.”

“When did you find out?”

“Four months ago.”

Ethan stared.

Claire explained she had found a box of Emily’s old hospital belongings in storage.

Inside were three cartons bearing Leo’s name.

A neonatal cap.

A wristband.

And a discharge summary folded inside an envelope.

Discharge summary.

For a child Ethan believed died at birth.

“Where is that document?”

Claire hesitated.

“I burned it.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“Why?”

“Because Emily asked me to.”

Emily was Noah’s mother.

And Claire’s older sister.

Emily had died eighteen months earlier in a car accident.

Or so Ethan had always believed.

Claire said:

“She left me instructions before she died.”

“What instructions?”

“If I ever found anything connected to Leo, destroy it.”

“Why?”

“She said you could never know.”

Ethan’s grief turned cold.

“Why?”

May you like

Claire looked toward Noah.

“Because Leo wasn’t supposed to come home.”
