Chapter 8 - Ryan’s Own Secret
Ryan had one confession left.
Before the championship, he had discovered Ironcrest was deducting money from younger fighters’ sponsorship funds.
One student, seventeen, nearly lost apartment because academy withheld stipend.
Ryan confronted Marcus.
Marcus said:
“Mind your fight.”
Ryan copied a ledger page.
He intended report after championship.
But he was afraid of losing title opportunity.
So he gave copy to someone he trusted.
Who?
Ethan’s wife Rachel.
Ethan stared.
“Rachel?”
Ryan nodded.
She had volunteered with athlete-support charity sponsoring youth division.
She and Ryan knew each other professionally.
No affair.
No secret romance.
Ryan met her twice.
He told her:
“If I report before final, Marcus will bury me.”
Rachel said:
“Then I’ll make sure someone sees it.”
She mailed page to Ethan anonymously.
Why not tell husband source?
Because Ryan asked confidentiality.
Ethan looked stunned.
Rachel had kept that from him.
She died? Wait Rachel alive? Earlier accident she survived. Could still be alive. Prompt only father/son, no mother; can be alive but absent? Better perhaps Rachel died years later? User prefers avoid fake death. Could be divorced? Let's decide.
Maybe Liam's mother Rachel died from cancer when Liam 7? But introducing death unnecessary. Better alive, separated from Ethan? Yet why not in studio. Could be just at work. Let's keep married and alive off-scene. Then Ethan can ask later.
Rachel confirmed.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Ryan made me promise until investigation started.”
“After crash?”
“Everything changed.”
She feared revealing Ryan as whistleblower would strengthen Marcus claim Ryan angry and reckless.
So she stayed quiet through Ryan prosecution.
That was ethically troubling.
Ryan stared.
“You knew?”
Rachel said:
“I thought if I spoke, prosecutor would say you had motive against Marcus.”
“I already went to prison.”
“I know.”
Her voice broke.
“I was wrong.”
Ryan had served eleven months.
Lost career.
Rachel’s silence did not cause conviction alone, but removed context that Marcus had motive to silence Ryan too.
Then Ethan asked:
“Did you ever suspect Marcus?”
Rachel said yes.
At hospital, Marcus arrived unusually fast.
He had bandage on wrist.
He told Rachel:
“Ryan lost control.”
How did he know before police publicly named vehicle?
That bothered her.
She told detective.
Detective noted.
No follow-up.
Why not?
Marcus claimed academy GPS alert notified vehicle crash.
There was such system.
Plausible.
Then Rachel found something in baby bag after crash.
A torn piece of paper.
Ironcrest ledger page.
She had carried copy intending hand Ethan after match.
Blood and glass damaged it.
She hid it.
Why?
Fear.
She kept it twelve years.
Now produced.
On margin Mark Ellis had handwritten:
M.V. AUTHORIZED TEMP HOLD.
That directly linked Marcus to athlete-fund deductions.
So Marcus’s fear of Ethan learning was valid.
Then Ryan said:
“You sent Ethan copy because you thought he’d expose it.”
“Yes.”
“Marcus somehow learned?”
Probably Mark monitored copier logs.
Ryan had copied ledger under his employee code.
Mark saw.
Marcus knew Ryan leaked something but not to whom.
After championship, Marcus confronted Ryan.
He asked:
“Who did you give it to?”
Ryan refused.
Marcus drugged him under guise calming.
Then Marcus assumed Ethan because Ethan raised ethics concerns.
So intimidation plan targeted Ethan.
Thus Ryan’s whistleblowing indirectly triggered events—but he did not cause accident morally.
Liam asked:
“Did Dad know Mom was helping Ryan?”
“No.”
“Did Mom cause accident?”
Rachel answered immediately:
“No.”
She mailed evidence of wrongdoing.
Marcus and Mark chose retaliation.
Important.
Then Liam asked:
“Why didn’t you tell me any of this?”
Both parents silent.
Rachel said:
“Because every version sounded like it would give you someone to hate.”
Liam looked at prosthetic.
“So instead you let me make up my own.”
That hurt.
Then he looked at Ryan.
“And he let guilt turn him into bully.”
Ryan lowered eyes.
“Yes.”
Then Liam asked:
“Who cracked medal?”
Ryan thought.
It had been intact after match.
Mark had taken it.
Crash impact likely cracked it when planted in SUV.
Forensic metallurgist later confirmed fracture pattern consistent with compression against metal rail, not intentional snapping.
So cracked medal was physical relic of crash.
Not mystical clue.
Then Liam said:
“Why did Dad give it to me?”
Ethan stared at floor.
“I didn’t.”
Liam looked confused.
“Mom did.”
Rachel had placed medal in Liam’s keepsake box when he was eight.
She wanted someday explain.
But never did.
Liam found it, assumed father’s because identical.
Ethan saw him wearing it once and said nothing.
Another silence.
Then Ryan whispered:
“That medal belongs to the night they blamed me.”
Liam held it out.
“Do you want it back?”
Ryan looked at Ethan.
Then at Liam.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t deserve to decide what it means to you.”
