Chapter 5 - Denise Vale
Denise Vale was seventy-one.
Marcus’s widow.
She agreed to meet Ethan, Liam, and Ryan with attorney.
She had not engraved date.
She recognized order.
“That came through Mark.”
Who was Mark?
Mark Ellis.
Foundation operations manager.
Former Ironcrest accountant.
Worked for Marcus in 2014.
Still alive.
Denise had trusted him with all grants.
Why would Mark forge Ethan request?
She didn’t know.
Then old records showed Mark processed payment for Liam’s prosthetic after Ryan personally nominated him.
Ryan had written:
I owe this child more than anyone knows.
Mark replied:
Then let foundation make it right.
Ryan believed charity.
Mark may have seen opportunity to reinforce narrative.
Why?
Mark had been arena accountant and logistics coordinator championship night.
He had access to academy vehicle keys.
He also handled post-event transport.
Could he be Guest 3?
Vehicle access profile records came from academy system.
Guest 3 was created under employee admin code:
ME-17.
Mark Ellis.
Ryan whispered:
“No.”
Mark had logged into SUV.
When?
10:52 p.m.
Fifty-six minutes before crash.
That did not prove driving at crash.
But placed him with vehicle.
Security footage?
Arena garage camera missing between 10:45–11:20.
Maintenance outage.
Who submitted maintenance ticket?
Mark.
Coincidence possible.
Then Ethan asked Denise:
“What was Marcus doing after match?”
She said:
“He called me.”
At 11:18.
Angry.
Said Ryan “ruined everything.”
What did that mean?
Marcus had wagered heavily?
No.
Sports betting would be cliché and criminal. Instead academy sponsorship.
Ironcrest had conditional sponsorship worth $4 million dependent on Ryan winning? That could motivate anger but not crash. Let's use insurance/contract.
Marcus had negotiated sale of Ironcrest Academy to national chain.
Valuation jumped if Ryan won championship.
Loss reduced earn-out by $1.2 million.
Marcus furious.
But would that lead to framing Ryan? Maybe.
Denise said Marcus blamed Ryan for sale collapsing.
Then Mark handled finances and knew shortfall.
Could Mark fear losing job.
But accident victim was Liam—not intended target.
Could SUV crash be deliberate toward Ethan's car? Rachel drove Ethan’s usual car? Yes. Maybe driver thought Ethan was in it.
Ethan went still.
Rachel had driven his black sedan that night because hers was in service.
The SUV struck passenger side.
Could driver have targeted Ethan?
Ryan asked:
“Was your car recognizable?”
“Yes.”
Personalized plate.
COLE1.
If someone wanted to frighten or hurt Ethan after championship—
they might assume he was driving.
Liam whispered:
“Someone was trying to hit you?”
Ethan said:
“We don’t know.”
Then Denise found Marcus diary.
One entry:
MARK SAYS ETHAN WILL BACK OFF AFTER TONIGHT.
Date:
October 17, 2014.
Ryan looked at Ethan.
“Back off what?”
Ethan had no idea.
Then Denise said:
“You do.”
She produced another page.
ETHAN FOUND THE LEDGER.
Ethan stared.
“What ledger?”
Denise looked confused.
“You tell me.”
Ethan genuinely didn’t know.
Then Liam asked:
“Dad?”
Ethan whispered:
May you like
“I think Marcus believed I knew something I didn’t.”
And perhaps someone tried to silence the wrong man by hitting the wrong car.
