Chapter 1 - The Date on Liam’s Prosthetic

The entire martial arts studio went silent after Ryan whispered Ethan’s name.

“...Ethan Cole?”

Ethan stood between him and Liam, breathing evenly.

Ryan’s punch had been stopped inches from Ethan’s face.

His follow-up attack had ended with Ryan crashing backward into a padded equipment rack, wooden staffs and training mats scattering around him.

But Ethan did not advance again.

He simply removed his black jacket.

A weathered medal hung beneath his shirt.

WORLD CHAMPION.

Ryan’s expression collapsed.

“The man you never beat,” Ethan said.

Several students stopped smirking.

Liam slowly pushed himself upright behind his father.

His prosthetic left leg had shifted during Ryan’s kick.

He adjusted the metal frame carefully.

Ryan’s eyes dropped.

Then froze.

Engraved into the prosthetic shaft was a date:

OCTOBER 17, 2014.

Ryan stopped breathing.

“No…”

His voice suddenly sounded nothing like the arrogant instructor from moments earlier.

“Was it that night?”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

Liam reached under his black martial arts uniform.

He pulled out an old championship medal.

Cracked through the center.

Almost identical to Ethan’s.

Ryan stared.

“What is that?”

Liam held it against his chest.

“My dad gave it to me.”

Ethan corrected quietly:

“No. That one was never mine.”

Ryan’s eyes snapped toward him.

Then whose?

Liam looked from Ryan to Ethan.

“That match cost my son his leg,” Ethan said.

The teenagers around the mat shifted uneasily.

Ryan’s face drained.

“I didn’t—”

Liam stepped forward.

“Dad…”

His voice was calm.

“Tell him who caused the accident.”

Ethan looked at his son.

Something in him resisted.

Not because he didn’t know.

Because Liam had never heard the complete story either.

Ryan noticed.

“You never told him?”

Ethan’s eyes hardened.

“I told him what he needed to know.”

Liam stared at his father.

“What does that mean?”

Ethan did not answer immediately.

Ryan laughed once, bitter and terrified.

“Of course.”

Ethan looked toward him.

“What?”

“You’re still doing it.”

“Doing what?”

“Deciding which truth everybody gets.”

The words struck harder than Ryan’s punch ever could.

Liam looked at his father.

“Dad?”

Ethan lowered his shoulders.

Then he said:

“The accident happened after the championship.”

Ryan whispered:

“No.”

Ethan continued:

“You didn’t cause it by losing that match.”

Ryan’s expression changed.

“Then why is the date on his leg?”

“Because someone wanted us to believe the match was the reason.”

Liam looked down at the engraving.

For the first time, the date he had worn for years stopped feeling like a memorial.

It felt like evidence.
