Chapter 4 - Ethan’s Fingerprints
Ethan had borrowed Marcus’s SUV before championship.
His own car battery failed.
Marcus offered.
Ethan drove from hotel to arena at noon.
Returned keys at 2 p.m.
Fingerprints in vehicle.
Then accident occurred eleven hours later.
Police found Ethan prints on dashboard and driver-side door.
They knew he borrowed vehicle earlier.
No suspicion at first because Ethan was visibly at arena press conference until 11:34.
Crash at 11:48.
Distance to intersection:
twelve minutes without traffic.
Possible.
Barely.
One camera showed Ethan leaving press room at 11:35.
Next confirmed location:
hospital at 12:21.
Could he have taken SUV and caused crash?
Ethan always said no.
Rachel believed him.
Police eventually ruled him unlikely because valet footage showed him leaving arena in organizer’s car at 11:39.
But that footage was later found mislabeled.
Timestamp drifted eight minutes.
Actual time could be 11:31.
So timeline became uncertain.
Why did Ethan hide this from Liam?
Because when Ethan reopened case three years later, he learned police had privately listed him as alternative suspect.
He feared Liam growing up wondering whether father caused injury.
So he told child simplified version:
“A crash happened after my championship.”
Not who drove.
Not Ryan.
But as Liam grew, he heard rumors.

Liam concluded Ryan responsible.
Ethan never corrected directly.
That was Ethan’s failure.
Ryan said:
“You let him believe it was me.”

“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because if I said police were wrong, he’d ask who was right.”
“And you didn’t know.”
“No.”
Liam stepped back.
“You let me hate him.”
“I let you believe something I should have corrected.”
Ryan looked at Liam.
“I deserved your anger for what I did today.”
He pointed to prosthetic.
“But not for twelve years ago.”
Liam’s eyes filled.
“Then why did Dad engrave date?”
Ethan answered:
“I didn’t.”
Liam looked down.
The prosthetic was built four years earlier.
Its previous pediatric prosthetics had no engraving.
Current one arrived with date already etched.
Who ordered customization?
The prosthetics foundation that covered upgraded athletic leg.
Foundation:
Vale Youth Mobility Fund.
Named after Marcus Vale.
Ryan went pale.
Marcus’s widow, Denise Vale, created it after his death.
She paid for Liam’s prosthetic.
Ethan thought it was restitution.
He never asked.
Why would fund engrave crash date?
Order form contained instruction:
ADD DATE AS FAMILY REQUEST.
Signature:
Ethan Cole.
Forged.
Someone still wanted accident tied publicly to championship.
Four years ago.
Long after Marcus died.
Who had access to foundation?
Denise.
And foundation director:
Coach Ryan Mercer.
Ryan stared.
“I never saw order.”
“You were director?”
“Honorary. I signed fundraising letters.”
Then Liam looked at him.
“Did you pay for my leg because you thought you caused accident?”
Ryan nodded.
