Chapter 3 - The Crash
The accident occurred at 11:48 p.m.
Forty-six minutes after championship ended.
Ethan and his wife Rachel had left arena separately.
Rachel drove home with baby Liam.
Ethan stayed for press.
At an intersection three miles from arena, an SUV ran red light.
It struck passenger side of Rachel’s car.
The infant seat absorbed most impact.
Rachel suffered fractured wrist and concussion.
Liam’s left leg was crushed below knee.
Doctors tried reconstruction for months.
Infection followed.
At sixteen months old, amputation became medically necessary.
The SUV was found abandoned two blocks away.
Registered to Marcus Vale’s academy.
Ryan’s jacket in back seat.
Ryan’s medal under front passenger seat.
His fingerprints on wheel.
Then Ryan himself was found unconscious in alley behind arena.
That detail never fit.
Police believed he crashed, fled, then collapsed from sedative he had taken voluntarily.
But if he fled crash two blocks away, why return almost three miles toward arena before collapsing?
Timeline impossible on foot.
Defense attorney raised it.
Prosecutor argued Ryan could have been picked up.
No evidence.
Ryan accepted plea to avoid more serious conviction.
He lost license to compete professionally.
Ethan said:
“I believed police.”
Ryan looked at him.
“Until when?”
“Three years later.”
“What happened?”
“Marcus died.”
Natural heart attack.
No murder.
His estate released private records.
Inside:
vehicle maintenance log.
The SUV had a steering-wheel access system storing driver profile.
Last authenticated driver before crash:
M. VALE.
Marcus.
Ryan stared.
“My coach.”
“Yes.”
Could Marcus have driven?
Possibly.
But fingerprint system also logged another driver.
Profile:
GUEST 3.
No identity.
Then Ethan found something else.
Arena parking footage.
At 11:09 p.m., Marcus helped Ryan into a black sedan.
Ryan could barely stand.
At 11:13, sedan drove away.
Different vehicle from crash SUV.
Ryan was not in SUV.
So who drove it?
Marcus remained arena until 11:30 according to public footage.
Could leave later and still crash at 11:48.
Yes.
But why frame Ryan?
Maybe Marcus feared scandal.
Maybe accident.
Then Ethan asked Ryan:
“Do you remember anything after fight?”
“Locker room.”
“Who was there?”
“Marcus.”
“What did he give you?”
Ryan stared.
“Water.”
Sedative could have been in bottle.
Then?
“He said I was embarrassing academy.”
“You argued?”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
“Nothing.”
Ryan woke in hospital under police guard.
So someone moved unconscious Ryan from locker room to alley.
Placed jacket in SUV.
Placed medal there.
Wiped some surfaces but not steering wheel.
If framing, why leave Ryan fingerprints on wheel?
Could have been transferred from earlier use.
Ryan had driven SUV during academy training.
Fingerprints preexisting.
Police assumed fresh.
Modern analysis unavailable then.
Then Liam asked:
“Was Marcus driving?”
Ethan answered:
“I don’t know.”
“You said Ryan wasn’t.”
“I know that.”
“Then who?”
Ethan looked toward cracked medal.
“Someone who wanted Ryan blamed.”
Ryan whispered:
“Marcus.”
Maybe.
But Ethan said:
“There was one more person who had access to SUV.”
“Who?”
“Me.”
Liam stared.
Ryan stared.
Ethan’s voice lowered.
“I had driven it that afternoon.”
Liam’s face changed.
“Dad?”
Ethan continued:
May you like
“That’s why I never told you full story.”
Because police had once considered Ethan too.
