Chapter 13 - The Apology Ryan Couldn’t Demand
Ryan asked to meet Liam.
Supervised.
Public community center.
Ethan gave Liam choice.
Liam agreed.
Ryan arrived without uniform.
No red-and-black instructor identity.
Just man.
“I’m sorry.”
Liam said nothing.
Ryan continued:
“I kicked your prosthetic because I hated what I thought it said about me.”
Liam looked at him.
“It says nothing about you.”
“I know now.”
“You should’ve known then.”
“Yes.”
“I was twelve.”
“Yes.”
“You’re forty.”
Ryan closed eyes.
“Yes.”
No excuse.
Then Liam asked:
“Did you hate disabled fighters?”
“No.”
“You acted like it.”
“Yes.”
“Would you have done that if Dad wasn’t there?”
Ryan took too long.
“I don’t know.”
That honesty hurt.
Liam said:
“Then you weren’t safe to coach.”
“No.”
Ryan agreed.
He did not ask forgiveness.
He said:
“If I coach again, it won’t be until I can answer that differently.”
Liam nodded.
Then gave runner-up medal back.
Ryan looked surprised.
“I thought you were keeping it.”
“It’s yours.”
“I don’t want it.”
“That’s not my problem.”
Ryan almost laughed.
Then Liam added:
“You don’t get to make me carry your guilt.”
Ryan accepted medal.
That was stronger.
Then Ethan asked if Liam wanted Ethan’s championship medal.
“No.”
Still.
“Maybe someday.”
“Maybe.”
Then father and son trained together.
No dramatic montage.
Basic forms.
Balance.
Footwork adapted.
Ethan corrected himself often.
“Do it like this—actually, tell me what works with your leg.”
Liam appreciated.
Control shifting.
Then Rachel told Ethan:
“He needs father, not coach.”
Ethan said:
“I know.”
He was learning.
Then Mark’s recent foundation forgery charge moved forward.
Historical crash civil findings established liability.
Denise agreed Vale estate would contribute to Liam’s long-term prosthetic-care trust through independent administrator.
Not personal gift.

Ethan insisted no nondisclosure.

Ryan also offered money.
Ethan declined.
“Your current assault issue handles separately.”
Ryan accepted.
Then Liam asked:
“Does having settlement mean they bought my leg?”
“No.”
“It means costs caused by wrongdoing are being paid.”
Good.
Then the old date plate from prosthetic was returned after replacement.
Liam considered throwing away.
Instead put it beside case records.
Not on body.
He wrote:
THIS DATE IS WHEN THE CRASH HAPPENED.
NOT WHEN I BECAME LESS.
A bit didactic, but emotionally fitting. User doesn't mind.
Then Ethan opened father’s package partially.

He stopped.
Liam said:
“You can open.”
Ethan asked:
“Do you want to?”
“Is it about my leg?”
“No.”
