Chapter 8 - Michael’s Last Job

Michael died after falling from scaffolding at a commercial renovation.
OSHA investigated.
Safety violations were found.
No evidence of intentional harm.
Rachel had accepted that.
Henry was not challenging the cause of death.
He was challenging why Michael had been there.
Michael was an electrical contractor.
The company hired for that project had never employed him.
Yet someone added his name to the subcontractor schedule for one day.
The day he died.
Why?
Daniel knew.
Michael was meeting someone inside the building.
An accountant.
Name:
Peter Cole.
Peter had traced money from the Richmond land through several shell companies.
Michael wanted evidence.
The meeting never happened.
Peter canceled that morning.
Michael went anyway, hoping to access archived records stored in the building.
He climbed into a restricted renovation area.
A railing failed.
He fell.
No murder.
But his secrecy placed him somewhere he should never have been.
Rachel cried differently after learning that.
Michael's death remained an accident.
But a lie had led him there.
Daniel blamed himself.
“I taught him secrets were safer than honesty.”
Rachel looked at him.
“Yes.”
Daniel accepted it.
Peter Cole was still alive.
He agreed to speak.
The missing Richmond land had produced rental and mineral-option income for years.
Approximately $3.1 million.
Where did it go?
Not Evelyn.
Not Richard.
A management company collected it.
Lawson Property Administration.
Rachel looked at Henry.
Henry looked genuinely stunned.
“That's not mine.”
Records showed the company formed using his surname and old medical-office address.
Someone had used Henry's identity.
Who?
Corporate filings listed an authorized manager:
Victoria Lawson.
Henry's wife.
Vanessa's biological father's wife had been collecting money from Vanessa and Rachel's property.
Henry sat down.
He knew nothing.
Victoria did.
When confronted, she admitted it.
Evelyn approached her twenty-two years earlier.
Evelyn feared Richard's old creditors would find the land.
She asked Victoria, an accountant, to manage it quietly.
Victoria agreed.
After Evelyn's death, she continued.
Why not notify Rachel and Vanessa?
Because Evelyn instructed her to wait.
Until when?
“Until the sisters stopped needing her money.”
Rachel frowned.
Evelyn had secretly paid for Rachel's college.
Vanessa's apartment.
Medical bills.
Michael's funeral.
Even some of Caleb's childcare.
Money from the land had been supporting them for years.
Evelyn wanted her daughters to build independent lives before learning they were wealthy.
It might have sounded noble.
Except secrecy had consequences.
Vanessa believed she needed the mansion to survive.
Rachel believed she was broke.
Michael died while investigating money Evelyn could have explained in one conversation.
Protection had become damage.
Again.
Then Victoria produced accounting records.
Every dollar documented.
No theft.
Except one payment.
$480,000 transferred three years earlier.
Recipient:
M. Mercer.
Daniel frowned.
“Michael?”
No.
Michael was already dead when the payment cleared.
May you like
Another M. Mercer existed.
Someone none of them knew.
