Chapter 6 - The Piece Vanessa Took
Rachel returned with Daniel.
Vanessa was gone.
So was one large piece of the vase.
Rachel called.
No answer.
Daniel searched the broken fragments.
“It's missing.”
Security footage showed Vanessa leaving twenty minutes after Rachel.
She carried her purse.
Nothing obvious.
Rachel remembered Vanessa's expensive handbag had a torn lining.
Large enough to hide porcelain.
Police were not yet involved in the family-property dispute, but Rachel's attorney advised documenting everything.
Then Vanessa called.
Her voice shook.
“I found it.”
“The film?”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Vanessa.”
“Rachel, Mom lied to both of us.”
Rachel almost laughed.
“That isn't news.”
“No. You don't understand.”
The microfilm was not a deed.
It was a birth record.
Rachel's birth record.
Mother:
Evelyn Mercer Hale.
Father:
Daniel Mercer.
Rachel nearly dropped the phone.
Impossible.
Daniel was standing beside her.
His face drained of color.
“No.”
Vanessa continued:
“There's more.”
Rachel put the call on speaker.
Daniel shouted:
“Vanessa, that record is false.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I never slept with Evelyn.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
A sentence she never wanted to hear.
Daniel explained.
Twenty-five years earlier, someone had created false birth certificates inside the Mercer trust files.
Why?
Beneficiary eligibility.
The trust originally passed only through biological Mercer descendants.
Daniel was adopted.
His children would not automatically qualify.
But Rachel, as Evelyn's biological daughter, would.
A record naming Daniel as father could create overlapping control.
Who created it?
Richard.
Rachel's father.
Daniel believed Richard had used false family records to manipulate trust voting rights.
Then Vanessa said:
“Rachel isn't the only one.”
Her own birth certificate on the film named:
Mother: Evelyn.
Father: Daniel.
Both sisters.
False.
Or at least Daniel insisted.
Independent DNA could settle it.
Rachel agreed immediately.
Daniel did too.
Vanessa refused.
Why?
Silence.
“Vanessa?”
“I already did one.”
Rachel's stomach dropped.
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
Daniel's voice softened.
“What did it say?”
Vanessa began crying.
“Daniel isn't my father.”
Rachel exhaled.
Then Vanessa added:
“Richard isn't either.”
Silence.
Their father was someone else.
Vanessa had discovered this months before Evelyn died.
She confronted their mother.
Evelyn admitted it.
But refused to name the man.
Instead she said:
“Break the vase after I'm gone.”
Vanessa had known about the vase too.
That was why she panicked when Caleb broke it before she was ready.
Rachel asked:
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Mom told me the truth would cost us the house.”
Again.
Money.
But Vanessa's voice changed.
“And because the man who is my father is still alive.”
“Who?”
Vanessa whispered:
May you like
“He's standing outside my car.”
Then the call disconnected.
