Chapter 12 - The Missing Page

Vanessa admitted she had found Michael's will two months earlier.

She removed one page.

Why?

Because it mentioned Sophie.

Vanessa had discovered Sophie was alive before Rachel did.

She was afraid.

Not of Sophie.

Of rejection.

So she hid the page.

Rachel was furious.

“You did it again.”

“I know.”

“You learned nothing.”

“I know.”

“Stop saying that!”

Vanessa flinched.

Rachel demanded the page.

Vanessa retrieved it from her car.

Michael's handwriting:

Vanessa must never be told Sophie is living in Maryland until Sophie turns eighteen or initiates contact.

Rachel frowned.

Sophie was already twenty.

Why keep hiding it?

Vanessa whispered:

“Because underneath that was this.”

A note from Evelyn.

If Sophie contacts us, Rachel must be the first person she speaks to.

Vanessa had interpreted it as another rejection.

Another declaration that Rachel was the safer sister.

But Rachel read the rest.

Not because Rachel is better.

Because Sophie remembers her, and familiarity may make first contact less frightening.

Vanessa stared.

She had stopped reading after the first sentence.

For two months she had hated Rachel over words she misunderstood.

Again.

Then Rachel noticed another document in the safe.

A property-insurance policy.

The mansion had recently been insured for nearly twice its appraised value.

Policyholder:

Vanessa Hale.

Rachel looked up.

“You insured a house you didn't own?”

Vanessa's face tightened.

“I thought I owned it.”

Beneficiary after mortgage settlement:

Vanessa.

Rachel suddenly understood why the sight of the torch terrified her.

If the house burned while Vanessa remained tied to the policy, suspicion would fall instantly.

“Were you planning something?”

“No.”

Rachel watched her.

Vanessa did not look away.

“I swear.”

The insurance agent confirmed Vanessa purchased the policy months earlier because she believed the house would transfer to her.

No evidence of arson planning.

No sinister scheme.

Just another financial mess.

Rachel extinguished the torch.

Then headlights appeared.

A second vehicle entered the driveway.

Sophie stepped out.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Rachel had not invited her.

Neither had Daniel.

Sophie had learned the address from old adoption records.

She had decided she was ready.

She walked toward them.

Vanessa couldn't move.

Sophie looked first at Rachel.

“I remember you.”

Rachel's eyes filled.

“I remember you too.”

Not enough.

But some.

Then Sophie looked at Vanessa.

Neither spoke.

Finally Vanessa whispered:

“I'm sorry.”

Sophie shook her head.

“Don't start there.”

Vanessa closed her mouth.

Sophie continued:

“I don't want your apology yet.”

“Okay.”

“I want the truth.”

Vanessa nodded.

“All of it?”

Sophie answered:

“Especially the parts that make you look bad.”

Rachel looked at her sister.

This was Vanessa's test.

Not money.

Not inheritance.

Truth without self-protection.

Vanessa took a breath.

Then began:

“The first thing you should know is that I wanted you.”

Sophie listened.

“The second is that wanting you didn't automatically make me capable of raising you.”

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“And the third is that last week I hurt a six-year-old boy because I was angry about a broken vase.”

Sophie stared.

Rachel had not expected Vanessa to begin there.

Neither had Vanessa.

Maybe that was why it mattered.

Then Sophie asked:

“Where is the boy?”

“With a friend.”

“Can I meet him?”

Rachel hesitated.

“Eventually.”

Sophie nodded.

Then:

“Because according to my adoption file, Caleb isn't the first child Aunt Vanessa hurt.”

Vanessa went pale.

“What?”

Sophie pulled a document from her bag.

There was another child.

A boy.

Born three years after Sophie.
