Chapter 4 - Michael’s Real Name

Rachel drove straight to Vanessa's house.

Not alone.

Her friend Claire stayed in the car with Caleb.

Rachel entered carrying copies of the trust documents.

Vanessa looked exhausted.

The shattered vase was still on the floor.

“You haven't cleaned it?”

Vanessa stared at the pieces.

“I was afraid there was something else inside.”

Rachel sat.

“Michael.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“His full name was Michael Mercer Hale.”

Rachel felt anger rising.

“No.”

“Daniel was his father.”

That made Daniel Caleb's biological grandfather.

Rachel's uncle Daniel.

Rachel stood so quickly the chair moved backward.

“Stop.”

Vanessa realized what Rachel was thinking.

“No. Daniel isn't Mom's biological brother.”

Rachel stared.

“He was adopted by Grandma and Grandpa Mercer.”

Relief came first.

Then fury at feeling relief at all.

Michael had known?

Yes.

At eighteen, Daniel told Michael the truth.

But Evelyn demanded Michael never tell Rachel.

“Why?”

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

“Because Mom blamed Daniel for Dad's death.”

Rachel's father, Richard Hale, died when she was seven.

Car accident.

Evelyn said he fell asleep driving.

Apparently there had been more.

Richard discovered the Mercer trust was losing money.

He accused Daniel of stealing.

Daniel denied it.

The brothers-in-law fought.

Two days later, Richard died.

Daniel disappeared three months after that.

Evelyn became convinced he was responsible.

No evidence ever proved it.

Michael grew up under another surname with his mother.

Years later, he met Rachel at college.

He knew she was Evelyn's daughter.

Rachel felt sick.

“He knew who I was before we dated?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know.”

That question belonged to Daniel.

Rachel demanded his location.

Vanessa refused.

Rachel placed the trust documents on the table.

“You threw my son out of a house that isn't yours.”

Vanessa flinched.

“I know.”

“You hurt him.”

Vanessa began crying.

“I know.”

“You grabbed a six-year-old by his hair over a vase.”

“I know!”

The scream echoed through the room.

Vanessa covered her face.

“I saw it break and panicked.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel told me there was something inside.”

“So you attacked Caleb?”

“There is no excuse.”

Rachel stopped.

That answer surprised her.

Vanessa did not blame stress.

Daniel.

Money.

Caleb.

She simply said:

“I did something horrible.”

Rachel did not forgive her.

But she listened.

Vanessa knew the vase contained a key.

She believed it opened evidence proving Daniel stole millions.

If Rachel found it, Vanessa feared the trust would collapse.

“Why would you care?”

“Because I borrowed against it.”

Rachel stared.

“You can't borrow against a trust you don't own.”

“I used Mom's old documents.”

Fraud.

Vanessa had obtained nearly $900,000 through loans by presenting herself as future owner of the house.

The bank had not yet discovered the trust restrictions.

If Rachel asserted ownership, Vanessa's entire financial life could implode.

Now the cruelty made sense.

Not justified.

Made sense.

Then Rachel asked:

“Where is Daniel?”

Vanessa whispered:

“Your old house.”

Rachel froze.

The house she shared with Michael before he died.

Vacant for four years.

Daniel had been living there for three months.

Waiting for Rachel to find him.
