Chapter 5 - What Michael Knew

Daniel Mercer opened the door before Rachel knocked.

He was sixty-eight.

Caleb's eyes were in his face.

That disturbed Rachel more than anything else.

“You knew my husband.”

Daniel nodded.

“He was my son.”

“Did Michael know who I was before we met?”

“Yes.”

Rachel's jaw tightened.

“Was our marriage arranged?”

“No.”

“Don't lie to me.”

“I introduced him to your college.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

Daniel looked ashamed.

Michael transferred universities partly because Daniel wanted someone near Rachel.

Not to marry her.

To watch Evelyn.

Daniel believed Evelyn had hidden evidence connected to the trust.

Michael agreed.

Then he met Rachel.

Fell in love.

And stopped reporting to Daniel.

Rachel wanted to hate the dead man.

Instead she remembered Michael making pancakes with Caleb on Sunday mornings.

People could begin with a lie and later love honestly.

That did not erase the lie.

Daniel showed her letters Michael had written.

One dated six months before their wedding.

I have to tell Rachel.

Daniel's reply:

Then tell her.

Michael never did.

Why?

Evelyn threatened to expose Daniel's identity and reopen accusations around Richard's death.

Michael feared Rachel would believe he had manipulated her.

He chose silence.

Exactly the choice that guaranteed worse betrayal later.

Then Rachel asked about her father's accident.

Daniel did not kill Richard.

Police records supported that.

Richard's crash was caused by a mechanical failure.

No evidence of sabotage.

But Daniel had been stealing from the trust.

Not millions.

$140,000.

He used it to cover debts from a failed business.

Richard discovered it.

Daniel promised repayment.

Then Richard died.

Daniel panicked.

He disappeared because he expected Evelyn to accuse him.

Cowardice again.

Not murder.

“Why come back now?”

Daniel looked at Rachel.

“Because Michael found what I couldn't.”

Before his death, Michael discovered the trust's largest missing asset.

Not money.

Property.

A 214-acre parcel outside Richmond.

Worth potentially $20 million.

It had disappeared from Mercer records in 2003.

Transferred to a company.

Hale Residential Holdings.

Rachel recognized the name.

Her father's surname.

“Who owned it?”

Daniel slid a document toward her.

Richard Hale.

Rachel's father had transferred Mercer land into his own company before he died.

So Richard had been stealing too.

Daniel's theft had merely exposed a larger one.

Then Michael discovered Richard did not keep the land.

He transferred it again.

Recipient:

Evelyn Hale.

Rachel stared.

Her mother had controlled the missing property for twenty-three years.

Yet Evelyn's will mentioned nothing about it.

“Where is it now?”

Daniel answered:

“That is what was hidden in the vase.”

Not the key.

A second object.

A microfilm strip sealed inside the porcelain base.

When the vase shattered, it should have fallen out.

Rachel remembered the floor.

The pieces.

The blood.

Vanessa.

She had found only the key.

Then Daniel asked:

“Who cleaned up the vase?”

Rachel went still.

Nobody.

The pieces were still there.

May you like

Meaning the microfilm might still be in the house.

Unless Vanessa already found it.
