Chapter 14 - Caleb’s Real Birthday

Rachel knew when she gave birth to her son.

March 11.

6:42 a.m.

There was no mystery.

So why would Michael use “Caleb's real birthday” as a password hint?

Daniel suggested another interpretation.

Maybe not birth date.

The day Caleb became Michael's son.

Rachel stared.

Michael was not Caleb's biological father.

That was not a secret.

Rachel became pregnant shortly after separating from a previous boyfriend, Jason Miller.

Michael knew.

He married Rachel when she was five months pregnant and later legally adopted Caleb.

The adoption date:

October 18.

Rachel entered 1018.

The laptop opened.

Michael's files were organized meticulously.

Trust documents.

Land records.

Letters.

Second Harbor accounts.

Then a folder:

FOR RACHEL — ONLY IF EVELYN WON'T TELL HER.

Inside was a video.

Michael appeared.

“If you're watching this, I'm probably in trouble with your mother.”

Rachel almost smiled through tears.

Michael explained everything he had discovered.

Daniel.

Sophie.

The trust.

The Richmond land.

Then:

“There's one thing Evelyn doesn't know.”

Rachel leaned closer.

“Jason contacted me.”

Caleb's biological father.

Jason disappeared before Caleb was born.

Rachel had believed he simply didn't want responsibility.

Not exactly.

Jason had joined the Army.

He wrote Rachel repeatedly.

She received nothing.

Why?

The letters were mailed to Evelyn's house.

Evelyn intercepted them.

Rachel's hands shook.

Why?

Evelyn hated Jason.

She thought he was unreliable.

When Michael entered Rachel's life, Evelyn decided he would make the better father.

So she removed Jason from the equation.

Rachel felt rage unlike anything she'd felt toward Vanessa.

Her mother had engineered her son's family.

Michael discovered the letters years later.

He contacted Jason.

Jason did not want to destroy Caleb's stable home.

He agreed to wait until Caleb was older.

Michael planned to tell Rachel.

Then died.

Again.

The truth postponed.

The consequences inherited.

Jason Miller was alive.

Living in North Carolina.

Married.

Two children.

He had never stopped wondering about Caleb.

Rachel contacted him carefully.

No surprise reunion.

No six-year-old suddenly told he had another father.

Child specialists first.

Jason agreed.

His first question:

“Is he happy?”

Rachel began crying.

“Yes.”

“Then we go slowly.”

Good.

For once, an adult chose patience without using it as an excuse for permanent secrecy.

Then Michael's video reached its final section.

“Rachel, your mother thinks inheritance is the danger.”

Michael looked directly into the camera.

“She is wrong.”

“The danger is deciding for other people because you're convinced you know what's best for them.”

Rachel stopped breathing.

Michael had summarized the entire family.

Evelyn chose for Vanessa.

For Sophie.

For Jason.

For Rachel.

Daniel chose for Michael.

Michael chose when Rachel should learn the truth.

Vanessa chose that Caleb deserved punishment for breaking a vase.

Everyone called control something prettier.

Protection.

Love.

Family.

Then Michael said:

“If Caleb ever breaks that stupid wooden airplane, open it.”

Rachel looked across the room.

The airplane.

Caleb still carried it everywhere.

She picked it up.

There was a tiny screw beneath one wing.

Inside the hollow body was a rolled piece of paper.

A map.

The Richmond property.

One location circled.

An old farmhouse.

Daniel recognized it.

The original Mercer family house.

Supposedly demolished in 1999.

Apparently not.

Underneath, Michael had written:

EVELYN NEVER TOLD ANYONE WHAT'S BURIED HERE.

Vanessa stared.

“Money?”

Rachel shook her head.

“After this family?”

May you like

She almost laughed.

“It could be another sibling.”
