Chapter 13 - The Son Vanessa Never Knew

Vanessa had never had a second pregnancy.
Medical records confirmed it.
The document Sophie found was false.
Child:
Benjamin Hale.
Born when Vanessa was twenty-one.
Mother:
Vanessa Hale.
Father:
unknown.
Adopted at birth.
Vanessa stared.
“That isn't my child.”
DNA testing eventually confirmed she was right.
Benjamin was not biologically related to Vanessa.
So why use her identity?
Evelyn.
She had allowed Vanessa's name to be used.
The real mother was a seventeen-year-old patient from the same residential program Vanessa attended.
Name:
Claire Dawson.
Claire's family feared scandal.
Evelyn helped arrange a confidential adoption.
Using Vanessa's identity made records harder to trace back to Claire.
It was illegal.
Evelyn told herself she was protecting a teenager.
Again.
Protection through falsification.
Benjamin was now sixteen.
His family had no interest in disrupting his life.
Neither did Rachel.
But the forged record created another problem.
Benjamin appeared in the Mercer trust database as Vanessa's child.
That meant he had potential beneficiary status.
Approximately $2 million had accumulated in a subtrust under his name.
Money belonging legally to whom?
That would require court review.
But someone had been withdrawing from it.
Over six years:
$610,000.
Authorized trustee:
Evelyn Hale.
After Evelyn's death:
Vanessa Hale.
Vanessa stared.
“I didn't know.”
Rachel believed her only after bank records showed withdrawals continuing automatically through preauthorized transfers.
Where did the money go?
A nonprofit.
Second Harbor Youth Services.
Rachel researched it.
It funded housing for teenagers leaving residential treatment.
Evelyn had been secretly using Benjamin's trust to support vulnerable adolescents.
A good cause.
Potentially improper money.
Good intentions did not legalize it.
Rachel was exhausted by moral grayness.
Then Second Harbor's director arrived for questioning.
Adam Cole.
Sophie's biological father.
Vanessa's teenage boyfriend.
Vanessa had not seen him in twenty years.
Adam looked at Sophie and immediately knew.
He began crying.
Sophie did not.
She had reached her limit for dramatic parents.
Adam explained Evelyn contacted him years earlier.
She admitted Sophie survived and had been adopted.
But refused to disclose where.
Adam agreed to help run Second Harbor because he believed it was a way to compensate for failing Vanessa.
Again, another adult trying to repair one secret with another.
Then Adam revealed something Vanessa did not know.
Evelyn had not forced Sophie's adoption alone.
Vanessa signed a consent form.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
Adam produced it.
Her signature.
Vanessa looked physically ill.
“I don't remember.”
Medical records from the residential facility showed Vanessa was receiving sedating psychiatric medication around the time.
Whether she had legal capacity to consent required expert review.
No one declared the adoption invalid from a single document.
Sophie interrupted:
“Stop.”
Everyone turned.
“I have parents.”
Her voice was calm.
“They raised me. I love them. Whatever happened twenty years ago doesn't turn me into property you can fight over.”
Rachel looked at her.
Sophie continued:
“I want my history. I don't want a custody battle about my childhood after my childhood is already over.”
Vanessa nodded.
Adam nodded.
Sophie had become the clearest adult in the room.
Then Adam looked at Rachel.
“Michael understood that.”
Rachel froze.
“You knew Michael?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“He worked for Second Harbor.”
Rachel's husband had secretly volunteered there for almost two years.
Why?
Because Michael knew Sophie was Vanessa's daughter.
He wanted to watch over her indirectly.
But there was something else.
Adam had Michael's old laptop.
One file remained encrypted.
The password hint:
CALEB'S REAL BIRTHDAY.
Rachel stared.
Caleb's birthday was March 11.
May you like
She entered it.
Wrong.
