Chapter 9 - Daniel’s Mother

Eleanor Bennett was not stalking children.

At least not in way photographs suggested.

Most images had been mailed to her anonymously.

Some were school/daycare public-event photographs.

Some came from Daniel.

He had secretly reconnected with mother after discovering Mia’s paternity.

Why had he told Emma she was dead?

Family rupture.

Eleanor had suffered alcohol addiction during Daniel’s adolescence.

After Daniel’s father died, home became unstable.

Emily left.

Daniel cut contact.

Years later Eleanor entered recovery.

Daniel refused reconciliation.

Then after discovering Westbridge error and learning Emily involved, he contacted both.

He did not tell Emma because he was ashamed of lies he had already told.

Not noble.

Not sinister.

Human cowardice compounded.

Eleanor knew Mia was Daniel’s biological child.

She also knew Lily and Mia looked increasingly alike.

She begged Daniel tell Emma and Rachel.

Daniel delayed because Thomas Carter was dying.

He feared revealing paternity would devastate dying man and Rachel simultaneously.

Then Thomas died.

Daniel still delayed.

Then Daniel died.

Truth remained.

Eleanor wanted tell Emma but Daniel had written:

If anything happens to me, let Emily finish Westbridge proof before Emma learns. Don't give her half a story.

Eleanor obeyed too long.

Who sent photographs?

Some Daniel.

Later anonymous.

Likely Natalie.

Why did Eleanor say “finally found Mia”?

Natalie called her that morning.

“She told me Mia was going to meet her sister.”

Eleanor thought Rachel knew.

When police explained disappearance, she broke down.

Natalie had manipulated her too.

Did Eleanor know where Natalie was?

“No.”

But she knew what Natalie wanted.

“She wants everyone to see Martin as savior.”

Eleanor produced letters.

Natalie argued Martin had discovered Thomas’s sample was unlikely viable and used Daniel’s sample because Daniel had authorized destruction anyway.

She called it “rescue decision.”

Eleanor responded once:

My son’s sample was not yours to give away. Rachel’s consent was not yours to replace. Mia can be loved without pretending what Martin did was right.

Natalie stopped writing.

That sentence became moral center.

Mia’s existence was not mistake.

The procedure was unauthorized.

Then Rachel Carter joined meeting.

She saw Eleanor.

“Did Thomas know?”

Eleanor handed Daniel’s research.

Thomas had signed backup anonymous-donor consent without Rachel.

But there was no evidence he knew Daniel’s sample specifically would be used.

Martin Shaw saw Thomas form.

He decided it was enough.

He removed Daniel sample scheduled for destruction.

He directed processing staff to treat it as donor backup.

Emily later encountered label conflict and “corrected” database, unaware Martin’s substitution.

Rachel’s insemination succeeded.

Martin concealed source.

Thomas believed either his sample or anonymous screened donor had been used.

Rachel believed Thomas sample.

Both were deceived differently.

Then Claire asked:

“Why did Martin choose Daniel?”

Daniel’s sample quality excellent.

Already screened.

Available.

Scheduled destruction.

Same clinic.

No active patient expected future use.

Convenience.

No secret relationship.

No affair.

No grand genetic plan.

Then Emma asked Eleanor:

“Who installed camera?”

“Natalie.”

“How do you know?”

“She told me.”

“Why?”

“She said people believe paperwork only after they see something impossible.”

Two identical-looking girls in same kitchen.

A manufactured visual shock designed to force truth.

Then Eleanor looked at Lily.

“But Natalie made one mistake.”

“What?”

“She thinks the girls are identical.”

“Aren't they?”

“No.”

Eleanor placed photographs side by side.

Mia had small crescent birthmark behind right ear.

Lily didn't.

Their resemblance was strong full-sister resemblance, amplified by matching clothes.

Not twins.

Not duplicates.

Natalie had deliberately created illusion.

Then front door camera alert sounded.

A package had been left outside.

Inside:

Thomas Carter’s wedding ring.

And Claire’s second stolen camera.
