Chapter 5 - Daniel’s Last Investigation

Police reopened Daniel’s death only enough to verify whether collision suspicious.
It wasn't.
A distracted commercial driver crossed lane.
Driver convicted.
No connection Westbridge.
Daniel had not been murdered.
That mattered.
Mystery did not need turn every death into conspiracy.
Daniel’s investigation survived in cloud storage.
He believed sample substitution intentional.
Why?
DB-414 and TC-441 barcode records showed manual edit six minutes before Rachel’s insemination.
Operator:
E.BENNETT.
Emma frowned.
“Ethan?”
Ethan Cole shook head.
“My last name isn't Bennett.”
Correct.
Ethan Cole had no relation to Emma or Daniel.
E.BENNETT was Emily Bennett.
Daniel’s older sister.
Emma stared.
“I didn't know Daniel had a sister.”
“He didn't talk about her?”
“He said he was an only child.”
Public records showed Emily Bennett existed.
Nine years older.
Former Westbridge laboratory quality manager.
She changed surname after marriage:
Emily Vale.
Current location unknown.
Why erase sister from family narrative?
Daniel and Emily had been estranged since their mother’s death.
Then Emma remembered Lily’s whisper:
“That woman came back.”
Claire.
But Lily had also whispered:
“She said Daddy sent her.”
Claire denied speaking to Lily before door opened.
Police checked porch camera.
Claire had not approached house previously that day.
So who told Lily “Daddy sent her”?
Someone else.
Possibly second girl.
Mia?
Rachel Carter said Mia had disappeared that morning.
Not kidnapped violently.
Rachel woke and found back door open, Mia gone.
Police already searching.
A note on Mia’s bed:
I'M GOING TO SEE LILY.
Written in adult handwriting.
Mia couldn't write that sentence.
Someone transported her.
Then hidden camera feed showed two girls.
One Lily.
One Mia.
So Mia had been inside Emma’s house.
How?
Back door.
Who dressed her identically?
Rachel said Mia left wearing purple pajamas.
Someone changed her into yellow shirt and denim overalls matching Lily.
That required preparation.
Claire received live-feed link directing her to house.
Someone orchestrated meeting.
But not to harm girls.
Why?
Maybe force adults discover resemblance.
Then police found clothing Mia had worn that morning folded beneath Emma’s back porch.
On top:
small envelope.
Inside:
photocopy of Daniel’s DNA test.
And handwritten:
HE KNEW THEY WERE SISTERS.
Emma sat down.
Who wanted truth exposed?
Daniel’s sister Emily was obvious candidate.
Then Rachel Carter looked at handwriting.
“I've seen this.”
“Where?”
“A birthday card sent to Mia every year.”
Anonymous.
No return address.
