Chapter 7 - Why Ethan Bought the Camera
Ethan had purchased camera.
He had not installed it.
Six months earlier Claire asked him to buy two compact cellular cameras for an investigation.
Claire had left hospital compliance and now worked private medical-risk consulting.
She was revisiting Westbridge after former patient complaints.
Ethan helped with technical equipment because they were partners.
Business partners.
Not romantic.
One camera remained in Claire’s office.
Other disappeared after her car was broken into.
Claire never reported because only inexpensive equipment missing.
Serial number proved stolen camera now inside Emma’s kitchen.
Someone had taken it specifically because it could transmit independently.
Who knew Claire was investigating?
Emily.
Rachel Carter.
Westbridge former staff.
And Daniel before death? Investigation began after his death, no.
Claire had told Ethan she suspected Daniel’s old inquiry connected to current complaints.
Why didn't Claire approach Emma directly?
Legal uncertainty.
She wanted confirm before reopening grief.
Then anonymous sender forced confrontation by giving her live link.
Emma was furious.
“You all keep deciding when I'm allowed to know my own life.”
Claire accepted criticism.
“Yes.”
Then Ethan explained why he stood behind Claire at door.
He had driven her.
That was all.
No secret relationship to Lily.
No hidden paternity.
No connection to Daniel.
His unease came because Claire told him stolen camera appeared inside home and anonymous sender instructed her confront armed/frightened mother.
Then police recovered camera cloud buffer.
Full video began thirty-two minutes before Emma crouched beside Lily.
It showed Lily alone in kitchen coloring.
Back door opened.
Mia entered.
No adult visible.
Mia wore matching clothes already.
She approached Lily.
The girls stared at each other.
Neither screamed.
Mia said:
“You look like me.”
Lily answered:
“You look like me.”
They touched hands.
Then Mia whispered something.
Audio poor.
Later one girl left frame.
Another approached Emma.
Which one?
Forensic gait analysis could not reliably distinguish.
But Lily had small healing scrape on left knee.
Mia did not.
Video angle briefly showed knees.
The girl who approached Emma had no scrape.
Mia.
Mia was child who whispered:
“Mommy... that woman came back.”
Emma closed eyes.
So she had crouched beside Mia believing she was Lily.
Where was real Lily?
In pantry.
Camera later showed her emerging, producing two-girl frame.
Why did Mia call Emma Mommy?
Rachel said Mia had never done that.
Audio enhancement revealed she did not initially say “Mommy.”
She said:
“Lily's mommy...”
Prompt dialogue exact says Mommy. Need preserve visible dialogue. Could say Mia had been coached to address Emma as Mommy. But must explain. Better footage confirms she said Mommy because someone instructed her. Why? Mia later explains? She's four; interview child-safe.
Child specialist interviewed Mia gently.
She said a “nice lady” drove her.
No name.
Lady told her:
“Wear Lily clothes. Tell Mommy the woman came back.”
“What woman?”
“The red phone woman.”
Claire’s picture.
So someone showed Mia Claire photo.
Then:
“What else did lady tell you?”
Mia answered:
“Say Daddy sent her.”
Emma felt sick.
The adult had coached Mia using Daniel.
Who knew Daniel was dead and could manipulate phrase?
Emily.
Claire.
Rachel.
Many.
Mia described driver:
“Yellow hair.”
Blonde woman.
Emily red-gray.
Claire brunette.
Rachel dark blonde? We can make Rachel brunette to avoid.
Unknown blonde.
Then Mia added:
“She had Daddy’s ring.”
Rachel Carter froze.
“Which daddy?”

The blonde woman had been wearing Thomas Carter’s wedding ring.
