Chapter 10 - Why Daniel Stayed Silent
Daniel’s recovered journal provided answer.
He had learned Mia was biological daughter after private DNA test.
His first reaction was not joy.
It was panic.
He wrote:
Mia has a father. Thomas loves her. Biology doesn't give me permission to walk into her life and detonate it.
Then:
But Rachel deserves truth.
Emma deserves truth.
Lily deserves truth someday.
I don't know how to do one without destroying all four.
He contacted Emily.
They investigated Westbridge.
Daniel intended tell both families after establishing whether Thomas had knowingly agreed.
Then Thomas’s cancer became terminal.
Daniel delayed.
Wrongly.
After Thomas died, Daniel prepared disclosure.
Then discovered Natalie Shaw was monitoring inquiry.
He feared she would publish records to clear Martin.
That could expose Mia publicly.
Daniel sought legal advice.
He created sealed disclosure packets.
Before he could deliver, he died in unrelated road collision.
Eleanor and Emily each possessed incomplete pieces.
Neither acted decisively.
Years passed.
Natalie became convinced silence was another attack on Martin’s legacy.
She decided force reveal.
So Daniel kept girls apart not because they were dangerous together.
Not because one was fake.
Not because secret inheritance.
He was trying—badly—to prevent chaotic disclosure until adults understood facts.
Claire said:
“He made truth conditional on perfect timing.”
Emma answered:
“And perfect timing never came.”
Exactly.
Then police found Natalie.
She surrendered at motel.
Mia had never been physically harmed.
Natalie admitted collecting her that morning by telling Mia she was friend of “Aunt E.”
Rachel had previously allowed Aunt E birthday cards, so phrase sounded familiar.
Natalie showed Thomas’s ring to gain trust.
She dressed Mia to match Lily.
She entered Emma’s house using old spare key.

Daniel’s effects.
After death, Eleanor stored boxes in rented unit.
Natalie broke into unit months earlier.
She found key and Daniel research.
She installed hidden camera.
She coached Mia:
call Emma Mommy.
say Claire came back.
say Daddy sent her.
mention yellow bird.

Daniel journal.
Then Natalie left through back door before Emma entered kitchen.
Mia whispered to Emma.
Real Lily had gone pantry to get snack.
When Emma left for door, both girls crossed camera view.
Natalie remotely sent feed to Claire.
Then Mia exited back door again? But prompt at end voice behind Emma implies one girl behind Emma. In actual event after Emma at door, Mia and Lily both inside. Police footage shows two. Voice behind Emma likely real Lily. Need explain later.
Why Claire?
Natalie wanted former compliance officer forced to witness Westbridge consequence.
Why Ethan?
She didn't specifically expect Ethan; Claire brought him.
Why bat?
Natalie did not predict bat specifically.
Message “before she hurts wrong child” reflected fear Emma might react badly if she discovered stranger girl.
Ironically staging created danger.
Detective Grant asked:
“What did you think would happen?”
Natalie cried.
“That Emma would see them together and finally ask why.”
“You abducted four-year-old to make point.”
“I brought her to sister.”
“Without permission.”
Natalie looked down.
No defense.
Then Emma asked:
“Why did Claire look terrified at end?”
Because Claire recognized Mia.
She had seen Carter family photograph during old Mirror Test investigation.
At door she initially believed live feed might be manipulated.
When she saw second girl physically behind Emma through hallway, she realized children were real.
But which girl had said “Mommy?” behind Emma?
