Chapter 3 - Mirror Test
There had been no secret cloning program.
No experiment creating duplicate children.
“Mirror Test” was mundane hospital terminology.
St. Matthew’s had introduced infant-identification software that compared electronic wristband records against physical bassinet assignments.
During rollout, compliance staff ran simulated duplicate identities to test whether system would detect two infants accidentally assigned same demographic record.
The dummy records were called Mirror Tests.
Claire supervised part of audit.
Mirror Test 4B failed.
System allowed two temporary infant profiles to carry same display name for seventeen minutes.
One happened to be:
LILY BENNETT.
Why use Emma’s child?
Claire insisted it was coincidence.
Test identities were generated from recent patient templates with identifiers altered.
That itself violated privacy policy.
But no second baby was created.
No infant was deliberately swapped.
Still, photograph showed two newborns labeled Lily.
Claire remembered incident.
One was Emma’s daughter.
Other was real newborn whose temporary electronic record had accidentally inherited Lily’s display name during test.
Who was second baby?
Hospital sealed records.
Police obtained authorization.
Her real name:
Mia Carter.
Born eleven minutes after Lily.
Parents:
Rachel and Thomas Carter.
Mia left hospital with Carters.
Lily left with Emma and Daniel Bennett.
Independent discharge checks existed.
Heel prints.
Blood types.
Archived photographs.
No evidence babies switched.
Then why did two identical four-year-olds appear now?
Detective Grant located Carter family.
Mia Carter died?
No.
Alive.
Living ninety miles away with mother Rachel Carter.
Current photograph arrived.
Emma stopped breathing.
Mia looked extraordinarily similar to Lily.
Not perfectly identical.
But enough that matching clothing and distance camera could fool someone.
Same dark hair.
Same face shape.
Same eyes.
Could they be related?
Rachel Carter agreed DNA testing.
Results stunned everyone.
Lily and Mia were full biological sisters.
Emma was Lily’s biological mother.
Thomas Carter was not Mia’s biological father.
Daniel Bennett—Emma’s late husband—was biological father of both girls.
Emma nearly dropped report.
“No.”
DNA repeated independently.
Same result.
Daniel had fathered another child around same time.
Obvious explanation:
affair.
Emma cried alone that night.
Then Rachel Carter arrived.
She looked equally devastated.
“I never slept with your husband.”
Emma stared.
“DNA says he fathered Mia.”
“I know.”
“Then explain.”
Rachel placed folder on table.
She and Thomas had undergone fertility treatment.
Not IVF.
Intrauterine insemination using Thomas’s stored sample after cancer treatment.
Mia was supposed to be Thomas’s biological daughter.
Thomas died believing she was.
Hospital birth records were not source of mix-up.
Fertility clinic was.
Someone had apparently used Daniel Bennett’s reproductive sample for Rachel’s procedure.
But Daniel had never been fertility patient.
Emma knew that.
Then Claire asked:
“Did Daniel ever bank sperm?”
Emma froze.
Seven years earlier Daniel had undergone surgery after workplace chemical exposure.
Doctor suggested fertility preservation beforehand.
He had stored one sample.
He later told Emma it had been destroyed.
Clinic?
Westbridge Reproductive Center.
Same clinic Rachel Carter used.
And Claire’s old Mirror Test investigation had contained one note:

The two mysteries had touched four years earlier.
