Chapter 13 - The Woman Who Wanted to Prove Her Father Right

Natalie Shaw’s full confession closed much of doorway mystery.

She had grown up worshipping Martin.

After Westbridge collapsed, she inherited his private files.

She discovered enough to know he had used Daniel Bennett’s sample in Rachel Carter’s procedure.

At first she was horrified.

Then she found Thomas’s backup-donor form.

She convinced herself this meant Martin had saved family from failed treatment.

She ignored Rachel’s missing consent.

Ignored Daniel’s missing consent.

Ignored that Daniel was not registered anonymous donor.

Ignored Emma.

When Daniel began investigating, Natalie contacted him.

She offered deal:

Stop pursuing Martin publicly and she would give him Mia’s complete records.

Daniel refused.

He wanted private disclosure to families and regulatory report.

Natalie feared father’s legacy destroyed.

After Daniel died, she waited.

Emily did nothing.

Eleanor did nothing.

Claire eventually reopened Westbridge.

Natalie decided she would control reveal.

She stole Claire’s cellular camera.

She broke into Eleanor’s storage unit and found Daniel’s spare house key and journal.

She learned Lily’s nickname.

She found Mia through Rachel.

She mailed cards? No, Emily sent cards. Natalie mailed anonymous photos to Eleanor later.

She recovered Thomas’s ring by having used fake Laura Mills ID after his death because Martin’s files indicated Thomas had signed backup consent; she wanted physical object tied to him as emotional proof.

That was grotesquely manipulative.

On confrontation day she took Mia without Rachel permission.

She told child Aunt E sent her.

She dressed her like Lily.

She entered Emma’s home.

Installed/activated camera already installed days earlier? To install, she had broken in days before using spare key. On day she brought Mia.

She coached Mia.

She left before Emma noticed.

She sent Claire feed.

Then watched remotely.

She expected Emma to discover resemblance and Claire to explain old Mirror Test.

She did not expect Emma grab bat.

When she saw bat, she sent warning:

SHOW EMMA BEFORE SHE HURTS THE WRONG CHILD.

Claire rushed there.

Ethan drove.

The confrontation unfolded.

Natalie introduced eleven-second buffered loop near end, making it appear impossible that two girls were on screen while one voice sounded behind Emma.

Her goal:

make Claire inspect feed.

find Mirror Test label.

reopen hospital report.

reach Westbridge.

It worked.

At cost of terrorizing children and adults.

She faced charges related to taking Mia, unlawful entry, surveillance, theft and other conduct.

Her desire to defend father did not excuse.

Then investigators finalized Martin Shaw findings.

No evidence Martin chose Daniel because of personal grudge or family connection.

He did not know Daniel socially.

Daniel sample was accessible, screened and scheduled destruction.

Thomas’s poor-quality sample made pregnancy unlikely.

Martin believed Thomas’s secret backup-donor consent gave him moral permission.

Legally/ethically it did not.

Rachel had not consented.

Daniel had not donated.

Martin falsified process to make procedure appear ordinary.

Emily’s label correction concealed substitution unintentionally.

Westbridge later denied hospital inquiry to avoid liability.

That was full reproductive truth.

Emma then met Emily.

“You knew my husband had another biological daughter.”

“Yes.”

“And waited.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Daniel asked me.”

“You could have ignored him.”

“Yes.”

No excuses.

Emma appreciated answer.

Eleanor too apologized for obeying Daniel’s secrecy after death.

Emma did not suddenly embrace them as family.

Trust would be earned or not.

Then Rachel asked Emma:

“What do we tell girls?”

Not now.

At four, age-appropriate truth:

They shared biological father.

Their families loved them.

Adults made mistakes.

As they grew, fuller truth would come.

No secret forever.

Emma agreed.

Then Claire gave Emma original hidden camera.

Evidence processing complete.

Emma didn't want it.

“Destroy it.”

Detective said she could after retention period.

Emma looked at small lens.

A device had made her doubt which child stood beside her.

But camera hadn't created confusion alone.

Matching clothes.

coaching.

buffer delay.

family resemblance.

secrecy.

Natalie built illusion from ordinary pieces.

Then Ethan received one final Westbridge archive folder.

Not about Lily or Mia.

He almost set aside.

Claire saw name:

ETHAN COLE — AGE 9.

Ethan frowned.

“I was never a Westbridge patient.”

Claire checked date.

Westbridge wasn't fertility clinic yet.

It had been rehabilitation center.

Ethan stared.

“I've never been there.”

The folder was sealed.

They did not open.
