Chapter 9 - Lily Was Being Watched

Emma nearly tore the evidence bag open herself.
“What does ‘Lily — Test 4’ mean?”
Police did not play the recording in front of Lily.
They listened privately.
Emma and Ethan were allowed after child-protection specialists reviewed it.
The recording was audio only.
A playground.
Children shouting.
Then Lily’s voice.
Another woman:
“If your mommy was hurt, who would you call first?”
Lily answered:
“Grandpa.”
“Not Daddy?”
“Daddy’s always working.”
Emma closed her eyes.
The woman continued:
“And if Grandpa told you something was dangerous, would you believe him?”
“Yes.”
“What if Grandma said something different?”
Lily hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
The recording ended.
Emma felt nauseated.
Someone had approached Lily at school more than once.
The school reviewed records.
A volunteer had signed in four times under different names.
Fake identification.
Gray hair.
Ruby ring.
Likely the same woman captured on camera.
Was it Mara?
Facial reconstruction from partial footage suggested age sixty to sixty-five.
Still inconclusive.
Then Claire recognized the voice.
Not immediately.
She replayed it three times.
Finally:
“That isn’t Mara.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I met Mara once.”
Everyone froze.
“When?”
“Twenty-seven years ago.”
Before Claire left Ethan, Mara came to the mansion secretly.
She wanted Claire’s help.
Wanted Ethan to learn the truth.
Claire refused.
She was terrified of Charles.
Mara’s voice was lower.
Rougher.
The playground woman sounded controlled.
Educated.
Almost clinical.
Eleanor listened.
Her face changed.
“I know her.”
Emma turned.
“Who?”
Eleanor whispered:
“Dr. Evelyn Shaw.”
A family psychologist.
Charles Parker had hired her decades ago.
She evaluated Mara.
She also advised Eleanor during Ethan’s childhood.
Ethan remembered vaguely.
Gray hair now.
Late sixties.
Alive.
Police located Shaw’s former clinic.
Closed twelve years earlier.
Her current address led to an empty townhouse.
Neighbors had not seen her for months.
Now a new theory formed.
Shaw helped Charles fabricate the reports that separated Mara from Ethan.
Maybe she had returned to manipulate the family again.
But why?
Then Henry said:
“Because I stopped paying her.”
Everyone turned.
Emma stared.
“You were paying her?”
Henry nodded.
For years.
After Charles died, Shaw threatened to reveal the forged reports.
Henry paid annual “consulting fees.”
Blackmail without the word blackmail.
“How long?”
“Fifteen years.”
“When did you stop?”
“Seven months ago.”
Exactly before the notebook entries began.
Ethan looked at his father with disgust.
“You paid someone for fifteen years to hide what happened to my biological mother.”
Henry whispered:
“I was protecting Eleanor.”
Eleanor snapped:
“No. You were protecting yourself.”
Henry looked at her.
Something finally broke.
She turned to Ethan.
“Your father signed the custody documents.”
Not Charles.
Henry.
He had known Mara wanted Ethan back.
He signed statements exaggerating her instability.
Because he and Eleanor had already begun thinking of Ethan as their son.
Henry’s silence had not been passive.
It had been participation.
Emma understood the notebook:
HENRY — CONTROL THROUGH SILENCE.
Whoever wrote it knew.
Then police found Dr. Shaw’s fingerprints on one of the archive tapes.
Good.
Too good.
Because the tape was thirty years old.
Her prints proved past involvement, not current manipulation.
Again, the evidence pointed toward a person but stopped short of solving anything.
Then Lily asked Emma:
“Why did the lady say Grandpa buried Daniel?”
Emma froze.
The notebook phrase.
ASK GRANDPA WHY HE BURIED HIM.
Henry had not buried Daniel literally.
He helped destroy his life with the theft accusation.
The phrase was metaphorical.
Whoever wrote it wanted Lily to ask.
Wanted Daniel to come.
Wanted old conflicts reopened.
This was orchestration.
Then the police officer who first looked into the basement returned with something he had withheld.
Emma recognized shame on his face.
“What?”
He placed a photograph on the table.
It had been taped beneath the bolted chair.
That was what made him recoil.
The photograph showed Emma asleep in her own bed.

Taken from inside her bedroom.
Only five nights earlier.
