The unknown voice was identified through an old professional lecture recording.
Dr. Adrian Vale.
Rebecca’s son.
Forty-one.
Clinical psychologist.
Estranged from Rebecca for nearly a decade.
Emma stared at Rebecca.
“You have a son.”
Rebecca looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
“Did he know Mara?”
“No. He was born years later.”
“Did he know Shaw?”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
That was the final betrayal.
Rebecca had introduced Adrian to Shaw when he was a graduate student.
She believed Shaw was brilliant despite what happened with Mara.
Adrian studied family systems.
Behavioral repetition.
Intergenerational trauma.
Control.
He became fascinated with the Parker case.
Shaw gave him records.
Not all at once.
Over years.
Then, during her final illness, she gave him Archive C.
Adrian disappeared from his university position eight months earlier.
Police traced his financial activity.
Cash.
Temporary rentals.
Fake identities.
The man had been everywhere.
Near Lily’s school.
Near the mansion.
Near Daniel.
Near Claire.
Near Rebecca.
But Adrian was not the masked man.
Daniel was real.
Adrian merely summoned him.
The psychological tests were Adrian’s.
Henry’s calls.
Eleanor’s bottle.
Daniel’s message.
Lily’s playground interview—conducted by Rebecca under Adrian’s manipulation.

The recreated roles.
Adrian wanted to prove Shaw’s theory:

Emma as Mara.

Adrian expected repetition.
Then Bell asked:
“Why photograph Emma sleeping?”
Rebecca whispered:
“To make her feel watched like Mara.”
“Who was in the basement?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“I still don’t know.”
That bothered Bell.
The basement room did not fit Adrian’s admitted pattern.
Police located his storage locker.
Inside were cameras.
Fake IDs.
Recordings.
Mara’s files.
A duplicate mansion key.
And a laptop.
The final project folder:
PARKER REPLICATION STUDY.
No institution approved it.
No ethics board.
This was obsession disguised as science.
Inside were predicted outcomes.
HENRY WILL LIE.
ELEANOR WILL USE FORCE.
DANIEL WILL SEEK REVENGE.
EMMA WILL PRIORITIZE LILY.
ETHAN WILL DELAY DECISION UNTIL EXTERNAL AUTHORITY ARRIVES.
LILY WILL CALL HENRY.
Most came true.
Adrian had manipulated the environment to make them true.
That made his “results” meaningless.
But one prediction failed.
ELEANOR WILL OPEN THE BASEMENT TO SILENCE EMMA.
She never did.
Instead she attacked Emma upstairs.
Then screamed for police not to open the basement.
Why?
Adrian’s notes showed confusion.
DAY 4: ELEANOR KNOWS SOMEONE IS BELOW. RESPONSE UNEXPECTED.
Someone below.
Not part of Adrian’s plan.
Bell stared.
Even the mastermind had discovered an element he did not create.
Then they opened another folder.
PHOTOGRAPH SOURCE — UNKNOWN.
The photograph of Emma sleeping had been sent to Adrian too.
He did not take it.
The basement woman photograph sent to Rebecca?
Also unknown.
The metallic knocking?
Not Adrian.
Someone else had entered his experiment.
Someone who knew the mansion.
Someone who knew the passages.
Someone who wanted Adrian to believe he controlled everything.
Emma whispered:
“Mara.”
But Bell shook her head.
“Maybe.”
Then police found Adrian.
Not running.
Unconscious inside a motel room.
Alive.
Beside him:
an old cassette player.
Playing Mara’s voice on repeat.
And a handwritten note:
YOU NEVER UNDERSTOOD THE TEST.
