Chapter 10 - Someone Had Been Inside Emma’s Room

The photograph changed everything.

Emma stopped sleeping in the mansion.

Police relocated the family temporarily.

Ethan objected when Emma chose a hotel suite instead of his father’s house.

She stared at him.

“I’m not taking Lily from one Parker house into another.”

He did not argue.

That mattered.

The photograph had been printed recently.

No fingerprints.

No metadata.

But the angle proved someone stood less than six feet from Emma while she slept.

Ethan had been beside her that night.

Who could enter?

House staff.

Family.

Someone with a key.

Or someone already inside.

Security logs showed no door opening between midnight and dawn.

Windows remained locked.

That meant either the logs were manipulated—

or the photographer was someone in the house overnight.

Eleanor had stayed.

Henry had stayed.

Lily.

Emma.

Ethan.

Rosa.

No Grace in this story; here perhaps no Grace. We must remain consistent: characters only? We can introduce others as story does. But let's not introduce too many. Already Claire/Shaw. Fine.

Henry had slept in the guest room after drinking too much at dinner.

Eleanor claimed she never left hers.

Ethan was beside Emma.

Rosa slept offsite.

Lily was ten.

No one obvious.

Then Daniel told police the mansion had servant passages.

Not secret tunnels.

Old maintenance routes behind walls.

One connected upstairs linen closets.

Another led from the basement to the second-floor storage room.

Henry denied it.

Plans proved Daniel right.

Someone could move through the house without opening monitored doors.

Police found dust disturbed in the passage behind Emma’s bedroom.

And one gray hair.

DNA did not match Eleanor.

Did not match Henry.

Did not match Claire.

Testing against Shaw unavailable.

The manipulation theory strengthened.

Then Ethan asked Daniel:

“How do you know these passages so well?”

Daniel stared at him.

“Because I helped Mara use them.”

“For what?”

“To see you.”

Emma’s throat tightened.

Mara secretly entered the mansion several times after being forced away.

She watched Ethan sleep.

Left small toys.

Touched his hair.

Daniel helped.

That sounded tender.

It was also trespassing.

Another morally complicated truth.

“When did it stop?”

“When Henry caught us.”

Henry looked away.

Daniel claimed Henry threatened Mara:

Come back again and I’ll have you committed.

Henry denied the exact words.

Not the confrontation.

Mara disappeared soon afterward.

This time, truly.

Daniel never saw her again.

Then Bell obtained Dr. Shaw’s old travel records.

She had left the United States six months earlier.

Died in Portugal four months ago.

Confirmed.

The apparent mastermind was dead before Lily’s first school encounter.

Another theory collapsed completely.

Someone was imitating Shaw.

Using her history.

Using Mara’s ring.

Using Daniel’s anger.

Using Emma’s vulnerability.

The notebook writer was not merely exposing secrets.

They were recreating old behaviors.

Mara sneaking through passages.

Grace? none. We avoid. Charles controlling through false evidence.

Shaw psychologically manipulating.

Henry burying conflict.

Eleanor using force.

Daniel arriving masked.

Each person was being pushed into repeating a role.

Emma realized something.

“What role am I repeating?”

No one answered.

She thought of the photograph.

Sleeping.

Observed.

Vulnerable.

Then Claire said quietly:

“Mara.”

Emma looked at her.

“What?”

“Whoever is doing this may be placing you in Mara’s position.”

Mother.

Disbelieved.

Controlled.

Threatened.

Someone trying to take her child.

Emma felt Lily’s hand slip into hers.

Then Ethan whispered:

“And Lily?”

Claire looked toward the little girl.

“Ethan.”

The room went cold.

The pattern was not recreating one event.

It was recreating the Parker family’s original fracture.

Emma as Mara.

Lily as Ethan.

Eleanor as Eleanor.

Henry as Henry.

Daniel as Daniel.

The same roles.

A new generation.

Whoever designed it wanted to see whether history would repeat.

And someone had labeled the recordings:

May you like

TEST 4.

Meaning there had been three tests before.
