Chapter 6 - The Twin Ruby Rings

The Parker family owned two ruby rings.

Eleanor’s mother had given one to each daughter.

Eleanor still wore hers.

Mara’s disappeared when Mara vanished.

Police photographs from the 1990s showed Mara wearing hers on the left hand.

Emma felt the story closing too quickly.

Mara alive.

Mara back.

Mara writing in Lily’s notebook.

Mara imprisoned downstairs.

Mara sending Daniel the photograph.

It fit.

Which meant it probably wasn’t that simple.

Police searched Lily’s school cameras.

A woman had entered wearing a maintenance badge.

Cap low.

Gray hair visible.

Her left hand wore a red stone.

She never faced the camera.

She stayed six minutes.

Left through a side exit.

The badge was fake.

Could be Mara.

Could be anyone imitating her.

Daniel insisted:

“Mara would be sixty-one.”

The woman’s build was plausible.

Eleanor became quieter with every development.

Emma confronted her.

“If Mara is alive, are you afraid of her?”

Eleanor’s answer surprised her.

“No.”

“Then why were you terrified of the basement?”

“Because I thought she was down there.”

Emma stared.

Eleanor explained she had received letters for three months.

No signature.

Each referenced things only Mara should know.

Childhood memories.

A scar behind Eleanor’s knee.

The song their mother sang.

The location of Ethan’s first lost tooth.

Then the letters became threatening.

YOU TOOK WHAT WAS MINE.

I’M COMING BACK FOR WHAT YOU KEPT.

Eleanor told Henry.

They did not tell Ethan.

Of course.

Another secret.

Then, one week ago:

THE HOUSE WILL GIVE HIM BACK TO ME.

Eleanor became convinced someone intended to abduct Ethan.

Emma almost laughed from sheer disbelief.

“He’s thirty-eight.”

“I know.”

“Then why attack me?”

Eleanor looked ashamed.

She said she had discovered a text on Emma’s phone that morning.

A message from an unknown number:

WHEN SHE’S DOWN, TAKE EMMA BELOW. ETHAN WILL FOLLOW.

Emma’s blood chilled.

“I never saw that.”

Eleanor admitted she had taken Emma’s phone while Emma showered.

She believed Emma was involved.

She confronted her.

Emma denied knowing anything.

Eleanor lost control.

“I thought if I kept you on the floor until police came—”

“You were strangling me.”

“I know.”

“No. You don’t get to rewrite it.”

Eleanor began crying.

“I know.”

The masked man—Daniel—arrived because he had also received instructions.

Same anonymous sender.

COME TO THE HOUSE. MARA IS THERE.

He entered secretly through a side door he remembered from decades ago.

Then he saw Lily.

Why grab her?

Daniel claimed he believed someone else was approaching and tried to pull Lily away from danger.

Lily described it differently.

“He grabbed me.”

Both could be true.

Intent and experience were not the same.

The officers’ body-camera footage showed Daniel pulling Lily toward the side hall, not deeper into the house.

Maybe he was abducting.

Maybe protecting.

Then Emma asked:

“Why wear a mask?”

Daniel looked embarrassed.

“Because I have a warrant.”

“For what?”

Failure to appear on an old parole-related civil matter after moving states years ago.

Not violent.

But enough to make him avoid police.

Suddenly the terrifying masked intruder became something more complicated.

Still reckless.

Still frightening Lily.

Not necessarily part of Eleanor’s plan.

Then Henry disappeared.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

He stopped answering questions.

That bothered Ethan.

Finally Ethan cornered him in the study.

“Did you know Mara was alive?”

Henry looked at his son.

“I knew she might be.”

“When?”

“Twenty-seven years ago.”

Ethan’s hands curled.

“What happened?”

Henry whispered:

“I paid her to leave.”

Ethan stared.

“How much?”

“Enough to start over.”

“Why?”

“Because she agreed.”

Daniel, listening from the doorway with an officer nearby, said:

“She didn’t.”

Henry turned.

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“She agreed because you showed her papers saying Ethan was sick.”

Ethan looked confused.

“What papers?”

Daniel answered:

“Documents saying contact with Mara could trigger a dangerous psychological condition in you.”

Emma frowned.

“That makes no medical sense.”

“No,” Daniel said.

“It didn’t.”

The records had been fabricated.

Someone convinced Mara that staying away would protect Ethan.

Who created them?

Henry claimed he did not know.

Daniel laughed.

Then Eleanor whispered:

“I do.”

Everyone turned.

“My father.”

May you like

Charles Parker.

The same man who built the basement room.
