Chapter 8 - Claire Was Alive

Claire Rowan was located within forty-eight hours.

Not hidden.

Not imprisoned.

Living under her married name in Vermont.

Emma almost could not process it.

Claire had a house.

A husband.

Two adult children.

A normal life.

She had never been missing.

“Why did you disappear?” Ethan asked over video interview.

Claire looked at him through the screen.

Age had changed her face.

Not her eyes.

“I didn’t disappear.”

“You left without telling me.”

“I told your family.”

“My family told me you left because you were afraid.”

Claire laughed sadly.

“That was partly true.”

“What were you afraid of?”

“Your grandfather.”

Charles.

Again.

Claire discovered the basement while searching for wine during a party.

She found Mara’s letters.

The forged medical records.

Daniel’s old employment papers.

She confronted Charles.

He threatened to ruin her parents financially.

Claire believed him.

She left Ethan because she did not know how to expose the Parker family without destroying everyone around her.

“Why not tell me?”

“You were twenty-four and worshipped them.”

Ethan lowered his eyes.

She was probably right.

“Why were your fingerprints recently in the basement?”

Claire’s expression changed.

“I came back.”

Three months ago.

Why?

Because someone mailed her one of Mara’s original letters.

The envelope said:

YOU WERE THE FIRST PERSON WHO FOUND THE ROOM. FINISH IT.

Claire contacted no one.

She entered the mansion while the family was away during a weekend trip.

An old service key still worked.

She explored the basement.

Found recent food.

Then heard someone upstairs and fled.

“Did you stay in the hidden room?”

“No.”

“Did you leave bottles?”

“Yes.”

“Did you take the photograph Daniel received?”

“No.”

Again, evidence separated.

Claire explained something else.

During her visit, she found a notebook.

Modern.

Black cover.

Inside were dates.

Names.

EMMA.

LILY.

ETHAN.

ELEANOR.

DANIEL.

Each with short notes.

Emma felt cold.

“What did it say beside my name?”

Claire hesitated.

“PRESSURE POINT: CHILDREN.”

Emma’s hand instinctively reached toward Lily.

“Beside Eleanor?”

“GUILT.”

“Ethan?”

“IDENTITY.”

“Daniel?”

“REVENGE.”

Everyone went silent.

Someone had mapped their vulnerabilities.

Not movements.

Emotions.

Claire took photographs of the notebook pages.

She sent copies to no one.

“Why?”

“I was scared.”

“Where are they?”

Claire opened a folder and uploaded them to police.

The pages looked clinical.

Some notes dated back six months.

Long before the recent crisis.

This had been planned.

Then Bell found the line beside Henry’s name.

CONTROL THROUGH SILENCE.

And beside Mara:

ABSENCE IS STRONGER THAN PRESENCE.

Emma read it twice.

Whoever designed this understood the family extraordinarily well.

Maybe Mara was not even involved.

Maybe her absence was the weapon.

Then one final note:

DO NOT LET THEM SEE THE ARCHIVE UNTIL THEY TURN ON EACH OTHER.

“What archive?” Ethan asked.

Claire zoomed another photograph.

A crude map of the basement.

At the far end, beyond the room police had already searched, was another marked space.

ARCHIVE C.

Police returned downstairs.

Behind a shelving unit, they found a sealed steel cabinet built into concrete.

Inside were decades of recordings.

Audio tapes.

Photographs.

Medical files.

Letters.

Private investigator reports.

Someone had preserved the Parker family’s secrets.

And the newest recording was dated only two days before Eleanor attacked Emma.
