Archive C contained them.
TEST 1 — HENRY.
Audio of Henry speaking with an unknown caller.
The caller said:
“Would you tell Ethan the truth if Mara returned?”
Henry answered:
“No. It would destroy him.”
Recorded five months earlier.
Henry had lied about never receiving strange calls.
TEST 2 — ELEANOR.
Hidden video from the kitchen.
An unknown person left Emma’s prenatal vitamins beside an unlabeled bottle.
Eleanor discovered them.
Instead of telling Emma, she removed the bottle and hid it.
Later she admitted she feared contamination.
Her instinct:
control information.
TEST 3 — DANIEL.
A message sent anonymously:
MARA IS ALIVE. HENRY KNOWS WHERE.
Daniel responded by buying a weapon.
Legal handgun.
He later left it in his car before entering the mansion.
Still revealing.
His instinct:
revenge.
TEST 4 — LILY.
The playground questions.
Who does she trust?
Who would she obey?
The tests were psychological provocations.
Someone had been measuring reactions.
Not randomly tormenting them.
Researching them.
Emma stared at the labels.
“Who does this?”
Claire answered:
“Someone who thinks people are predictable.”
Henry whispered:
“Shaw.”
But Shaw was dead.
Maybe a student.
A child.
A patient.
Someone trained by her.
Police searched Shaw’s estate.
Most professional records had been destroyed.
One storage unit remained.
Inside:
old Parker files.
Including a cassette labeled M.P.
Mara Parker.
The interview was conducted after Mara lost custody of Ethan.
Her voice filled the room.
“If they keep telling a child the same story long enough, he’ll call it memory.”
Shaw:
“Who is they?”
“My family.”
“What story?”
“That I abandoned him.”
Pause.
Mara:
“I’m not afraid Ethan will hate me. I’m afraid he’ll grow up thinking control is love.”
Emma looked toward Ethan.
He could not meet her eyes.
The recording continued.
Mara accused Shaw of helping Charles manipulate her.
Shaw denied.
Mara laughed.
“You’re studying us.”
Silence.
“You’re not helping.”
Long pause.
“You want to see what happens when one person changes the story and everyone else adjusts.”
Emma’s skin prickled.
Shaw finally said:
“That’s not true.”
Mara answered:
“Then why are you recording every family session?”
The cassette ended.
Maybe Shaw had begun the “tests” decades earlier.
Maybe someone had inherited the material.
Then police found a ledger.
Shaw had one research assistant during those years.
Name:
REBECCA VALE.
Emma did not recognize it.
Eleanor did.
Her eyes widened.
“No.”
“Who is she?”
Eleanor looked toward Lily.
“Rebecca was Mara’s roommate.”
Not just Shaw’s assistant.
Mara’s closest friend.
She had been inside the family.
She knew everyone.
Rebecca vanished from professional records after Shaw lost her license in another state over ethical violations.
Police traced her.
No current address.
But a facial-age progression was generated from an old photograph.
Gray hair.
Narrow face.
