Chapter 1 - The Knock Beneath the Floor

“Don’t open it.”

Eleanor’s voice was barely louder than Emma’s breathing.

Yet every person in the mansion heard her.

The first police officer stood two steps from the concealed doorway beneath the staircase, flashlight trembling in his hand. He had already looked inside once.

Whatever he had seen had drained every trace of color from his face.

Now he refused to move closer.

Behind him, the second officer lowered his hand toward his holster.

“What did you see?”

The first officer still did not answer.

A faint metallic sound rose from below.

Knock.

Pause.

Knock.

Not random.

Too evenly spaced.

Lily’s fingers tightened around Emma’s sleeve.

Emma, still sitting on the polished floor against Grandfather’s chest, stopped coughing.

For one terrible second she forgot the pain burning through her throat.

She stared at the black opening.

Eleanor twisted against the officer holding her.

“Close it!”

Nobody obeyed.

“CLOSE IT!”

This time there was panic in her voice.

Not anger.

Not control.

Terror.

That frightened Emma more than anything Eleanor had done minutes earlier.

Eleanor had pinned her to the floor.

She had pressed both hands against Emma’s throat while Emma clawed desperately at her wrists.

She had watched Emma’s strength fading.

Then Lily came home.

Then the masked man appeared.

Then Grandfather and the police arrived.

Through all of it, Eleanor had looked furious.

Now she looked afraid.

The officer at the basement entrance finally whispered:

“There’s a chair.”

His partner frowned.

“A chair?”

“Bolted to the floor.”

Silence.

Emma’s stomach turned.

“What else?”

The officer shook his head.

“I couldn’t see.”

That was not true.

Everyone knew it.

He had seen enough to make him step backward.

Grandfather gently pulled Lily closer.

“No one goes down until the house is cleared.”

His voice sounded controlled.

Too controlled.

Emma looked at him.

Something about the way he had said it bothered her.

Not what he said.

How quickly he said it.

As if he already knew the basement existed.

The officers split up.

Two remained with Eleanor and the masked man.

One called for additional units.

Another approached Emma and asked if she needed an ambulance.

“Yes,” Grandfather answered before Emma could.

She turned toward him.

“I can speak.”

His expression softened.

“I know.”

But his hand remained firm around her shoulder.

Emma noticed.

So did Lily.

The masked man lay restrained near the far wall.

His mask had shifted slightly during the fall, revealing part of his cheek.

No one had removed it yet.

One officer asked him his name.

He said nothing.

Eleanor turned toward him.

Their eyes met.

Only for a second.

But Emma saw it.

Recognition.

Not surprise.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“You know him,” Emma whispered.

Eleanor looked away.

The metallic knock sounded again.

Three times now.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Lily began crying silently.

Grandfather murmured:

“It could be pipes.”

The first officer stared at him.

“No.”

Grandfather looked up.

The officer’s voice lowered.

“That came from behind the wall.”

A second team arrived.

They secured the staircase.

Photographed the hidden door.

Checked the hinges.

One officer discovered scratches around the inner latch.

Recent scratches.

Someone had repeatedly tried to open it from below.

Emma’s breathing turned shallow again.

Eleanor heard the officer say it.

Her knees nearly gave out.

“Please.”

That word stunned Ethan’s father more than the shouting had.

Emma had never heard Eleanor beg.

“Please what?” the officer asked.

Eleanor stared into the darkness.

“Don’t call down there.”

“Why?”

She closed her eyes.

“Because if someone answers…”

Her voice broke.

“…then everything I did today was too late.”

Emma stared at her.

“What did you do?”

Eleanor opened her eyes.

For the first time since attacking Emma, there was no rage in them.

Only grief.

“I was trying to stop him from taking you downstairs.”

Emma felt Lily grip her harder.

The officer nearest the masked man looked toward him.

Then crouched.

He pulled the mask away.

Emma had never seen the man before.

Grandfather had.

His entire body went rigid.

Lily whispered:

“Grandpa?”

Grandfather’s face had changed.

The man on the floor slowly smiled.

And said the first words anyone had heard from him.

“You still recognize me, Henry.”

Grandfather stopped breathing.

Emma stared between them.

“Who is he?”

Henry did not answer.

But Eleanor did.

“His name is Daniel Mercer.”

Emma frowned.

The name meant nothing to her.

Then Lily whispered:

“I know that name.”

Everyone turned.

Emma stared at her daughter.

“From where?”

Lily’s lips trembled.

May you like

She looked toward the hidden basement.

“Someone wrote it inside my school notebook.”
