Chapter 6 - The Red File
Daniel’s red file had vanished after his death nine years earlier.
Sarah believed Margaret took it.
It contained Daniel’s investigation into Bennett Manufacturing CFO Victor Hale.
Victor had inflated payroll/contractor expenses in late 2000s.
Robert Hale whistleblower exposed it.
Thomas forced Victor out quietly and recovered funds.
Why quiet?
Victor was Robert’s older brother.
Public prosecution could expose Robert’s cooperation and threats.
Again secrecy framed as protection.
Daniel hated pattern.
He believed family used privacy as excuse to avoid accountability.
Red file documented everything.
After Daniel died from sudden aneurysm? We earlier said heart condition. Keep documented congenital cardiac event nine years ago. No foul play.
Sarah searched belongings.
Red file gone.
Margaret denied.
Thomas dead earlier? Thomas died six years ago, Daniel died nine years ago, so Thomas alive then. He said he didn't have it.
Eleanor Hale—family administrator—helped estate after Daniel’s death.
Could she take?
She denied.
Claire?
She had no involvement then.
Then Sarah revealed why she returned now.
Three weeks earlier she received photograph.
Red file on Margaret’s study desk.
Current date newspaper beside it.
Someone possessed it and entered locked study.
Message:
COME BACK OR ETHAN NEVER SEES WHAT HIS MOTHER DID.
So Sarah enlisted Claire.
Claire found camera.
Then Eleanor attacked.
Why did Eleanor care if Claire “kept quiet”?
Because Eleanor had been contacted too.
Her message:
IF SARAH OPENS RED FILE, THOMAS’S LAST LIE BECOMES ETHAN’S PROBLEM.
She believed Claire was helping Sarah access it.
Eleanor tried stop.
Still assault.
Then Maya found red file.
Not in study.
Inside false panel beneath foyer console.
Likely placed recently.
Who?
Camera footage could reveal.
But recorder segment from previous night missing.
Remote deletion.
Charles likely.
Why place file under camera then delete footage?
Maybe to protect courier identity.
Ethan opened only after evidence logged.
Contents:
Victor Hale fraud.
Robert Hale cooperation.
Daniel’s notes.
Margaret correspondence.
Then one section:
CLAIRE MORGAN.
Claire stared.
She had been twenty-one when Daniel died.
Did she know him?
“No.”
Inside was photograph of Claire at college fundraiser.
Daniel had written:
SHE DOESN’T KNOW WHO PAID TUITION.
Claire went pale.
Her tuition had been scholarship.
Bennett Foundation?
No.
Whitmore Education Fund.
An independent donor-advised fund.
Daniel traced donations to Thomas Bennett.
Why would Thomas pay Claire’s tuition before she knew family?
Claire’s father, Michael Morgan, had worked Bennett Manufacturing and died in workplace accident when Claire was fourteen.
Company settlement funded education trust anonymously.
Claire knew there had been settlement but not source specifics.
Thomas personally supplemented after discovering benefits insufficient.
No hidden paternity.
No secret family relation.
Why Daniel investigate Claire?
Because Michael Morgan was another witness in Victor Hale fraud case.
His fatal accident was investigated and ruled industrial equipment failure unrelated to testimony.
No evidence foul play.
Daniel nevertheless believed family concealed extent of connection.
Claire had eventually become close to Bennetts without knowing.
Thomas may have felt guilty.
Then file contained Margaret note:
KEEP CLAIRE AWAY FROM ETHAN UNTIL CHARLES CONFIRMS WHAT SHE KNOWS.
Claire had met Ethan socially years later.
Margaret interfered with invitations, jobs, access.
Not because romance.
Because she feared Claire inherited father’s evidence.
Claire never knew.
That made her anger toward Eleanor? Not directly.
Then Eleanor whispered:
“This is why camera was installed.”
“To watch Claire?”
“No.”
“To watch anyone Margaret thought might bring old witnesses back into house.”
Ethan’s face hardened.
“My mother turned foyer into checkpoint.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Thomas hated it.”
So Thomas’s contingency camera may have been intended to monitor misuse of Margaret’s surveillance habit—not continue it.
Then Sarah found final red-file tab:
C.R. — IF HE RETURNS, CAMERA BECOMES EVIDENCE.
Charles Reed.
What had Charles done?
Nothing yet explained why current camera was remotely controlled.
Then Maya received alert.
Charles had called police.
From payphone? Better attorney office.
He was with lawyer.
He wanted surrender one drive.
And he said:
“Tell Ethan I never watched Claire get attacked.”
“So who moved camera?”
