Chapter 12 - Andrew Morgan

Andrew Morgan, fifty-nine, had no criminal history.

He owned restoration company.

He admitted visiting mansion.

Why?

Margaret paid him to maintain Room 3 archives after guest house sold.

Diane Morgan, Claire’s mother, had entrusted whistleblower copies to brother Andrew before death.

Margaret learned.

Instead of destroying, she negotiated storage.

Why secretly?

Both feared Victor Hale’s former associates might sue/intimidate? By then old case mostly settled.

More honestly: they feared scandal.

Andrew kept boxes in warehouse.

Margaret met yearly.

After her death, Eleanor continued one meeting.

The three-nights-ago footage showed Eleanor telling Andrew Ethan must never know Margaret was still meeting him.

Why?

Because Margaret had spent years telling Ethan Room 3 records destroyed.

She lied.

Again.

Andrew brought final box now because Sarah requested red file.

He had no control of camera.

No plot.

Then Claire asked:

“Why did Eleanor attack me specifically?”

Eleanor finally gave fuller answer.

She believed Claire had found Diane Morgan’s box.

Inside was a statement Diane wrote before death accusing Margaret of obstructing 1998 payroll investigation.

If public, Margaret’s reputation damaged.

Eleanor had promised Margaret keep private unless legal need.

Claire said:

“So you attacked me to protect a dead woman’s reputation.”

Eleanor closed eyes.

“Yes.”

No heroic excuse.

Then what had Claire discovered before assault?

Not only camera.

Inside recorder she had found a clip from previous week.

It showed Eleanor opening foyer wall panel and placing something behind carved molding.

Claire retrieved it.

What?

Small memory card.

She hid it in nightdress pocket before Eleanor entered.

Police recovered.

Contents:

video files copied from old foyer system.

One labeled:

ETHAN — AGE 10.

Room 3? Video showed child Ethan at mansion front door crying.

Margaret kneels.

He says:

“Mom said Claire’s mom is in the basement.”

But Claire was not born? Age30 now, Ethan38, when Ethan10 Claire2. Her mom Diane could be in basement.

Margaret says:

“You didn’t see Diane.”

Ethan says:

“She gave Dad the red folder.”

Margaret looks toward camera, then takes Ethan away.

This proved Ethan had encountered Diane Morgan during 1998 investigation.

He simply forgot childhood detail.

No hidden family relation.

Why did Eleanor hide copy?

Thomas told her preserve if red file resurfaced.

She feared it would reopen Margaret obstruction.

Then clip continued.

Diane Morgan exits basement.

Followed by man.

Victor Hale.

Diane had claimed Victor threatened her.

Here they appeared calmly talking.

Maybe she cooperated?

Claire’s expression changed.

“Was my mother working with him?”

Andrew Morgan said no.

Diane had worn recorder that day? He had audio transcript.

She was pretending cooperation to get him admit fraud.

That footage without audio could falsely stain her.

Margaret kept it because she feared public misinterpretation.

Again why secrecy matters.

Then memory card contained final file.

Current date.

Recorded 5:42 a.m. today.

Eleanor in foyer with Samuel Price.

Samuel had denied visiting.

Audio:

Samuel: “If Claire finds camera, she’ll find Margaret’s last recording.”

Eleanor: “Then delete it.”

Samuel: “Charles has another copy.”

Eleanor: “Then get it before Ethan hears her.”

Margaret’s last recording.

This became core.

What had Ethan’s mother recorded before death?

Samuel looked defeated.

“I was trying to protect Ethan.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Of course you were.”

“From what?”

May you like

Samuel whispered:

“From hearing why Margaret believed Thomas died hating him.”
