Chapter 2 - Margaret’s Locked Study
Police arrived before Ethan touched the study door.
Claire’s assault was treated separately from camera mystery.
Eleanor did not deny grabbing Claire.
She claimed Claire had broken into a locked room and stolen private family records.
That did not justify attacking her.
Claire admitted she had entered.
“How?” Detective Maya Torres asked.
“Door was already unlocked.”
Eleanor stared at her.
“No, it wasn’t.”
Claire produced small brass key.
Found in foyer console that morning.
Stamped:
M-2.
It fit Margaret Bennett’s study.
Who put it there?
Unknown.
Claire said she noticed camera after seeing reflection in polished entry mirror.
It moved.
Mansion’s official cameras were fixed-angle.
She became suspicious.
She traced cable behind trim to old service conduit entering Margaret’s study.
She used key.
Inside, behind bookshelves, she found recorder.
Before she could inspect, Eleanor entered.
Argument.
Then assault.
Maya obtained proper access.
Study looked preserved from four years earlier.
Desk.
Books.
Framed photographs.
Closed curtains.
Behind bookshelf was modern network recorder installed less than two years ago.
Someone had entered after Margaret’s death.
Recorder stored months of foyer footage.
Not just front door.
Audio too.
Ethan felt violated.
“Who authorized this?”
Security company had no record.
Serial number traced to private systems integrator:
Northgate Surveillance.
Customer name:
Bennett Residence Trust.
Ethan managed trust operations.
He never signed.
Order authorization:
Eleanor Hale.
Ethan looked at older woman.
“You installed it?”
Eleanor shook her head.
“My name was used.”
Signature looked authentic.
But Eleanor admitted something.
“I knew camera existed.”
“When?”
“Three months.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I thought your father arranged it.”
“Dad died six years ago.”
“I know what year he died.”
“Then how could he arrange a camera installed two years ago?”
Eleanor looked toward recorder.
“Because instructions were in his estate file.”
Thomas Bennett had left sealed memorandum:
If Margaret dies before the foyer issue is resolved, authorize replacement observation camera through residence trustee.
Foyer issue?
No explanation.
Ethan’s mother Margaret died two years after Thomas.
Someone apparently interpreted old memorandum and installed camera later.
But who?
Residence trust had three trustees.
Ethan.
Eleanor Hale, longtime family administrator.
Samuel Price, family attorney.
Samuel denied.
Eleanor denied signing.
Ethan denied.
Then Maya checked trust payment.
Invoice paid legitimately from maintenance account.
Approved through Samuel’s credential.
Samuel stared at records.
“I didn’t approve this.”
Another identity misuse.
Then recorder opened.
Footage from previous night showed Claire entering foyer at 2:13 a.m.
She walked directly beneath camera.
Looked up.
And said:
“I know you’re watching.”
Claire went pale.
Ethan turned.
“You knew before this morning.”
Claire looked away.
“I suspected.”
“Why lie?”
“Because I wasn’t alone.”
Footage continued.
A second person entered frame.
A woman.
Only back visible.
Gray coat.
Dark hair.
Claire handed her an envelope.
Ethan stared.
“Who is that?”
Claire whispered:
May you like
“Your sister.”
Ethan had no sister.
