Chapter 5 - The Man Thomas Left Behind

Sarah’s Daniel notes contained location:
Oak Ridge House.
A private residential facility forty miles outside city.
In 2009 Bennett Foundation funded it.
Not psychiatric institution.
Transitional housing for adults recovering from workplace injuries and financial hardship.
Thomas and Charles drove there that night.
Who was “him”?
Facility visitor log:
Thomas Bennett.
Charles Reed.
Robert Hale.
Robert Hale, forty-six then, former Bennett Manufacturing accountant.
He had accused Thomas’s CFO of payroll manipulation.
Company terminated him for unrelated policy violation.
Robert threatened lawsuit.
Thomas met him privately at Oak Ridge.
That sounded like hush meeting.
Records showed settlement next week.
$190,000.
Was Robert abandoned there?
No.
Robert stayed voluntarily for two nights while attorney arranged safe housing because he had received threats from another former employee.
Then moved.
Alive today.
Maya located him.
He agreed speak.
Thomas and Charles brought him to Oak Ridge because Robert feared CFO’s security contractor.
Margaret secretly followed them because she suspected Thomas was paying mistress? Different reason.
At Oak Ridge she learned whistleblower issue.
She demanded Thomas cut Robert off to avoid scandal.
Thomas refused.
Argument.
Charles later drove Margaret home.
Thomas remained with Robert.
So old audio:
“you were supposed to leave him there”
meant Margaret wanted Charles leave Thomas at Oak Ridge rather than bring him home?
Charles entered alone at 2:03.
Maybe came for something.
Thomas returned earlier 1:17 according footage. Contradiction.
Could clocks be off? Technical review found old camera clock had shifted one hour after power reset.
So timeline:
Thomas returned around 2:17 actual.
Charles entered 3:03 actual.
Margaret audio 3:07.
Still both back.
Margaret meant leave Robert there? Charles may have brought Robert near mansion?
Robert denied coming.
Then he remembered.
A second man was at Oak Ridge.
Name:
Ethan Bennett.
Impossible; Ethan was home? He had been 21 and away college maybe. Not.
Another Ethan Bennett?
No.
Administrative alias.
Facility used “E. Bennett” as protected sponsor code for anonymous Foundation beneficiary.
Not person.
Again avoid easy identity twist.
So “him” likely not record.
Then Robert said one man arrived after Thomas left.
Young.
Mid-twenties.
Daniel Bennett.
Sarah’s husband.
Daniel had followed father.
Thomas did not know.
Daniel confronted Robert about settlement.
Robert told him financial issue.
Daniel realized father was protecting whistleblower, not bribing him.
Then Margaret arrived.
She was furious Daniel involved.
Why?
Daniel had already been threatening expose CFO.
Margaret feared family reputation.
She told Charles:
“You were supposed to leave him there.”
“Him” was Daniel.
She wanted Charles drive Daniel back to Oak Ridge after Daniel followed them home? Maybe.
Old audio incomplete.
No sinister confinement necessarily.
Then Sarah produced Daniel’s journal.
October 15:
MOM THINKS CHARLES CAN KEEP ME QUIET.
DAD THINKS MONEY CAN.
THEY’RE BOTH WRONG.
So Charles may have been tasked to persuade Daniel.
What happened to Charles next?
He left Bennett employment after refusing.
Daniel wrote:
CHARLES QUIT BECAUSE MOM ASKED HIM TO WATCH ME.
That explained public exit.
Thomas then hired Charles privately through Reed Consulting—possibly to protect Daniel, not spy.
Charles moved away.
Years later he installed current camera under Thomas contingency.
Still why?
Thomas memo referenced “foyer issue.”
Samuel found second page.
Foyer issue = unauthorized entries into Margaret’s study.
Thomas believed someone was stealing Daniel’s files after Daniel’s death.
He asked Charles, long-trusted security contractor, to maintain independent camera if family system ever compromised.
So current camera may be defensive.
Then who controlled it during Claire attack?
Charles.
Possibly watching remotely.
Why not intervene?
Maybe he wasn't live.
But camera moved live.
Maya traced Northgate remote service endpoint to private residence.
Owner:
Charles Reed.
Alive.
Police drove there.
House empty.
Coffee warm? Avoid cliché.
No sign forced entry.
On desk:
live monitor showing Bennett foyer.
And handwritten note:
CLAIRE FOUND IT TOO EARLY.
Next:
DO NOT LET ELEANOR OPEN THE RED FILE.
Ethan whispered:
“What red file?”
May you like
Sarah answered.
“Daniel had one.”
