Chapter 3 - The Sister Ethan Never Had
The woman was not Ethan’s biological sister.
Claire clarified immediately.
Her name was Sarah Bennett.
No relation by blood.
She had married Ethan’s older cousin Daniel Bennett fifteen years earlier.
Daniel died nine years ago from a documented heart condition.
Sarah kept surname after his death.
Ethan had not seen her in seven years.
Calling her “your sister” had been emotional shorthand from years when family treated her as one.
Why return secretly?
Sarah had contacted Claire two weeks earlier.
She claimed someone was recording people entering mansion.
She showed still photographs from foyer.
Claire thought Sarah was paranoid.
Then one image showed Claire herself inside house on day she knew official security system had been offline for maintenance.
So another camera existed.
Sarah asked Claire find it.
Why not Ethan?
Because Sarah believed Ethan’s accounts were being monitored.
By whom?
Unknown.
The envelope Claire gave Sarah contained photographs of hidden cable and recorder cabinet.
Sarah left before anyone saw.
Where was she now?
Phone off.
Home empty.
No evidence abduction.
She frequently traveled for work.
But timing concerning.
Then Maya asked Claire why she entered study.
Because Sarah told her M-2 key would appear in console.
“Who was supposed to put it there?”
“She wouldn’t say.”
“You followed instructions from woman you haven’t seen in years?”
Claire nodded.
“I wanted proof before telling Ethan.”
Ethan was furious.
“You keep deciding when I’m allowed to know things in my house.”
Claire lowered eyes.
“Yes.”
Eleanor interrupted.
“Sarah should have stayed away.”
Maya turned.
“You knew she was back?”
“I knew she might come.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas warned us.”
“Warned what?”
“If Sarah ever returned asking about foyer camera, we were not to give her Margaret’s tapes.”
“What tapes?”
Eleanor realized she had said too much.
Inside Margaret’s study, police found old VHS tapes and digital discs.
Most family events.
One box:
FOYER — 2007–2010.
Thomas had installed earlier surveillance decades before current camera.
Why?
Home had experienced jewelry thefts.
At least official reason.
Footage showed guests, staff, deliveries.
Then one disc marked:
DO NOT ARCHIVE — OCTOBER 14, 2009.
That date meant nothing to Ethan.
It meant something to Sarah.
When police reached her later that night, she asked:
“Did you find October fourteen?”
“Yes.”
“Don’t play it without Ethan.”
“Why?”
“Because Margaret lied to him about what happened that night.”
Ethan listened over speaker.
“What happened?”
Sarah went quiet.
“Your father left the house with someone.”
“So?”
“He came back alone.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why does my mother matter?”
“Because she deleted the return footage.”
Maya asked Sarah come station.
She agreed.
Before hanging up she said one more thing.
“Ethan, if camera moved by itself today, then whoever has Thomas’s remote access is still alive.”
Ethan looked at Eleanor.
Thomas was dead.
Margaret was dead.
Daniel was dead.
Who could still have it?
Eleanor whispered:
“Only one person.”
“Who?”
Eleanor looked toward camera.
“Charles Reed.”
Ethan’s expression changed.

Charles Reed had been Thomas Bennett’s driver.
And he had disappeared in 2009.
