Chapter 9 - Cedar Hill

Laura was not at Cedar Hill when Ethan arrived.
The room from monitor existed.
Bed.
Lamp.
Curtains.
Camera.
Empty.
Staff confirmed Laura stayed there under surname Ellis for three months.
She left two days ago.
Voluntarily.
Where?
No forwarding address.
But she left envelope for Ethan.
This one in her handwriting.
I knew you would eventually follow the monitor.
I needed to know whether you came because Corinne confessed or because you forced the cabinet open.
Ethan stopped.
He had forced it.
Laura continued:
If Corinne told you voluntarily, she may finally be ready to stop controlling everyone.
If you broke it open, nothing has changed yet.
Ethan looked at Claire? No Claire here. Corinne had come with police separately? Better she remained. He read.
I love Maisie.
I never stopped.
I was afraid to come home because every person around us kept deciding what I needed before asking me.
Corinne.
Martin.
Hale.
Even you, sometimes.
That landed.
Ethan remembered signing legal documents without reading.
Allowing Corinne to manage household.
Accepting Laura “left” because anger made explanation easier than uncertainty.
Laura did not blame him for disappearance.
But she did not excuse him either.
Then:
Maisie’s pointing matters.
She saw Corinne put something in cabinet three weeks ago.
Ask what.
Ethan returned.
Corinne denied placing anything recently.
Maisie, too young to explain, repeatedly touched lower cabinet drawer.
Police opened hidden base.
Inside:
sealed laboratory report.
Corinne stared.
“I didn’t put that there.”
Fingerprint:
Laura.
She had hidden it six nights earlier.
Report compared original pharmacy pills to Hale toxicology.
Conclusion:
Laura’s symptoms were caused initially by pharmacy dispensing error.
Hale later continued unnecessary sedative taper despite clear mismatch.
No evidence someone intentionally poisoned Laura before admission.
That removed one imagined mastermind.
Then final page:
Threat to Maisie came from Nathan Hale.
Already proven.
So why remain hidden now?
Because of something else in cabinet.
Police removed rear wooden panel.
Behind it:
a narrow document envelope.
Not from Laura.
From Corinne.
Dated eight months ago.
TITLE:
PETITION FOR PERMANENT GUARDIANSHIP — MAISIE CARTER.
Applicant:
Corinne Carter.
Ethan stared.
“You tried to take custody of my daughter?”
Corinne began shaking.
“It was never filed.”
“Why did you prepare it?”
“At the time we thought Laura might never recover.”
“I was alive.”
“You were traveling constantly.”
“So?”
“I thought Maisie needed stability.”
“You mean you.”
Corinne closed eyes.
“Yes.”
That was what Laura discovered.
Corinne had begun imagining Maisie as hers to protect.
Laura stopped trusting her.
And now Ethan understood why cabinet terrified Corinne more than live monitor.

It contained proof not only that Laura survived—
but that Corinne had once planned to legally replace her.
